Approaching the $2 million TAB Summer of Glory trots fans have a growing number of ways to stay in touch with news via radio and the internet.
A plethora of shows and podcasts are being made available by Harness Racing Victoria’s (HRV) Trots Media team at thetrots.com.au and media partners.
On Victoria’s radio home of harness racing, RSN927am, Jason Bonnington and Blake Redden join Gareth Hall for Gait Speed every Monday on RSN Central.
The panel is joined by the stars of the sulky and other trots players to discuss the headline stories, find out about the characters and review the weekend action.
Additionally Hall speaks to trainers and drivers daily on RSN Central, as well as Trots Media’s form analysts to find listeners a winner.
The RSN action continues on Saturday mornings when Dan Mielicki, Victoria’s voice of the trots, saddles up alongside Simone Fisher and Matt Stewart for Cracking the Codes, a magazine-style show focusing on the colour of all three racing codes.
Later on Saturday mornings between 9am until midday on SEN in metro Melbourne and regional stations throughout Victoria it’s Top of the Trots on the popular Crocmedia program, Off the Bench.
Hosts Craig Hutchison and Liam Pickering are joined by Geelong AFL star and passionate harness fan Josh Jenkins to play ‘fantasy harness racing’ for charity, the premise being each player chooses their driver for the upcoming feature meeting and points are awarded based on performance. Hutchy is playing for Ronald McDonald House, Pickering for Beyond Blue and Jenkins for Freeze MND.
Listeners to Melbourne’s 3AW are hearing weekly Victorian trots news updates with Tony Leonard, while monthly segments with Ross Stevenson on the high-rating breakfast program highlight the important role harness racing plays throughout Victoria.
An area of significant growth in recent years at HRV Trots Media has been the podcast channel.
Many harness racing fans report staying up to date by listening to podcasts through their car’s Bluetooth system. All the above radio programs are available on podcast, as well as additional content exclusive to Trots Media.
To get all the latest podcasts simply download your favourite podcast app (Apple Podcasts on iPhone is the most popular), search for Trots Media and subscribe. You will never miss a show.
The current line-up of content includes Tooth be Told, a popular conversation style show hosted by Paul Campbell.
Campbell chats with harness racing’s characters, delving into their backstories and finding out what makes them tick. So far Brian Gath, Graeme Wilson, Peter Manning, Ross Sugars and Dick Lee are among those to be featured on Tooth be Told.
Every Friday the Grand Circuit podcast, hosted by Bonnington and Redden, delivers a detailed form preview in the GoodForm team’s unique style. Grand Circuit provides a full race-by-race look ahead to Melton along with other observations.
On Mondays the Metrospective podcast takes a retrospective look back at the weekend’s Victorian trots, with hosts Michael Howard, Cody Winnell and Blake Redden going race-by-race from Melton.
The show, which at times takes a jovial tone, veers in a plethora of directions late and features the Metrospective Medal for the leading drivers of the weekend.
The Thursday 5pm live Facebook show, Thursdy for Trots, can also be listened to on reply via the podcast channel or at HRV Trots Media's Soundcloud page. Campbell and Toby McKinnon catch up with guests from around the traps as they host the show track-side at the Thursday evening meeting.
