Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) advises participants to exercise caution when engaging a non-HRV HERO affiliated person to re-home a racehorse.

Due diligence should be undertaken to ensure that animal welfare is the priority as HRV has received some complaints from people engaging non-HRV HERO re-trainers.

HRV HERO re-trainers are approved by HRV to deliver a service that focuses first and foremost on the welfare of the horse being re-homed. HRV HERO re-trainers complete an application process and are subject to background checks. They are skilled and passionate re-trainers, who assess the quality of future homes of HRV HERO graduate horses.

HRV HERO recently increased the number of re-trainers within the program. The increase in re-trainers means more positions are available for horses to be re-trained after their racing career. The waiting time for horses entering the program has been reduced by 83 per cent.

The HRV HERO program has operated since 2015 and continues to set the equine welfare benchmark through the development, facilitation and promotion of pathways for retired pacers and trotters.

A list of HRV HERO recognised re-trainers can be found on the HRV HERO website
