Gammalite versus Popular Alm was one of the great harness racing battles and Bruce Clarke relived the day his Terang warhorse mowed down the beloved Poppy on the greatest stage of them all.
The reinsman features in the latest Legends of the Inter Dominion production, which relives the 1983 grand final in New Zealand.
“It was a very exciting time,” Clarke said. “The Inter Dominion was the pinnacle of all of the races you tried for. Our arch rival, Popular Alm, he might not have enjoyed the carnivals as much as Gammalite did, because as we got closer to the final, we were getting closer to Popular Alm all the time until such time as we saw in New Zealand he was able to beat him.”
