Leading reinsman Jack Laugher is predicting a bright future for the Jayne Davies-trained Captain Bellasario after an eye-catching victory in the Barwon Facilities Maintenance 3yo Pace (2100m) at Geelong on Saturday night.
The gelded son of Captaintreacherous produced a withering finish, coming from last to round up leader Dessie Gee and go away by 4m in a mile rate of 1:58.5min.
Laugher has no doubt Captain Bellasario has what it takes to measure up to Group 1 company.
“He’s a really nice horse,” he told Trots Vision post-race.
“He was always looking to be a nice horse as a two-year-old and he just hadn’t put things together yet, but he’s put them together now.
“He’s really impressive.”

Laugher said despite being well back on straightening for home, he always felt he would run down Dessie Gee, even though he admitted to being a little further away from the leader than he would have liked.
He said in the end there were no worries though for the “little fella”.
“He’s got that brilliant turn of foot and closing speed,” he said.
Captain Bellasario won two of nine starts as a two-year-old and this season has now put together two wins and three seconds from five outings.
