With an ode to the past but an eye on the future CEO Ben Murphy said Kilmore Racing Club hoped to blaze a path that continued to deliver trots fans one of the most prized Trots Country Cups.

Kilmore's Jet Roofing pacing and McIvor Estate trotting cups, just a week away, will kick off the Trots Country Cups Championship in bold fashion with the club transferring its famed cup to the Thursday night before the AFL Grand Final parade public holiday.

Mr Murphy joined Cody Winnell and Trent Masenhelder on RSN 927's One Out One Back to explain the move was an attempt to lure the leading pacers to their $70,000 cup and meet local demand.

"We are really excited about what racing at this time of the year can mean for our club and continuing to grow our cup night again," Mr Murphy said.

"We've been working really hard. When we sat down with HRV to go through our wishlist for this year, one of the things we wanted to do is to look to get our cup back into a race where the really good horses are coming through at the right time of the year.

"With the move of the Vic Cup (to October 13) it really sits nicely - two weeks before the Victoria Cup, leading into the Inter Dominion, we think it all goes well."

Mr Murphy said the club was hoping to attract the developing area's many families to the track to create a new era of support for the sport.

"We want to get local people in our growing area to come to the trots and experience (the cup)," he said. "Once they've been once they always want to come again.

"What we know at Kilmore, when we race on a Thursday night we get a really good crowd along. The strategy of the club has been how do we be a bit different and embrace something like that.

"If you tell your customers what they want that's when they don't come. If you respond to your customers we think we get a better outcome. The Thursday before the (AFL) Grand Final, with the Friday public holiday, was a natural fit for us.

"What we are trying to do is say we want to be at this time of the year, we want to be where the good horses are going to come to start their campaigns towards the Vic Cup and Inter Dominion and other big races at this time of the year.

"I understand and respect the history and tradition of the sport, but we also need to adapt and that's what we are trying to do."
