Every Saturday, Ryan Phelan hunts for the most reliable locks to strengthen your multi bets. By analysing race maps, sectional times, and key trainer/driver combinations, he delivers sharp insights to add confidence – and a touch of excitement – to your harness racing, thoroughbred, or sports multis.
Each selection is rated with low, medium, or high confidence and includes a suggested place or win price. The goal? Minimise risk, maximise consistency, and stack the odds in your favour for a strong overall return.
Race 1 – 2240m APG Pace
1/7 Maxnjax – Jordan Leedham/Philip Chircop
There looks to be plenty of speed off the front row, and with uncertainty in the map, looking for those to run on. Maxnjax was superb resuming from a spell beating a smart field, albeit from a better draw. He will settle near last but can reel off a quick last quarter.
Confidence: Low Rated Place Price: $2.60
Race 2 – 2240m Logical Staffing Solutions NMW Pace
2/1 Ideal Bandit – Ryan Sanderson/Shane Sanderson
Ideal Bandit raced to a high level in a limited period and has proven in his five career wins he’s capable of running time. He was a very strong winner at his last start, and prior at this track was game when forced to race tough. He has options from this draw to race handy.
Confidence: High Rated Place Price: $1.50
Race 3 – 2240m Prydes Easifeed Trot
3/9 Mojito Madness – James Herbertson/Samantha Gangell
Mojito Madness changed stables last start, and there was marked improvement in her attitude and performance against better-quality opposition. There appears to be speed off the front row for her to work into the race over the last lap, which has the potential to be slowly run.
Confidence: Low Rated Win Price: $2.60
Race 4 – 2240m Nevele R Stud Vicbred Voucher Pace
4/3 Star To Fall – Abbey Turnbull/Craig Turnbull
Star To Fall is a progressive filly and comes here on the back of an unlucky fifth in the NSW Oaks heats behind Willows Girl. She was held up in the home straight but hit the line when clear in what was a great effort. This looks suitable.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $2.50
Race 5 – 1720m Dynamic Print Group Trot
5/8 Kyvalley Jetstream – Chris Alford/Brent Lilley
Kyvalley Jetstream has been racing very well this preparation, only missing a place once in eight attempts and that was last start where he didn’t trot well when wide on the corner. This race sets up well for him, likely to trail the leader over the short trip and get his chance late along the passing lane.
Confidence: Low Rated Place Price: $2.50
Race 6 – 2240m Benstud Standardbreds NMW Pace
6/4 Where Is Woody – Anne-Maree Conroy/Michael Barby
Where Is Woody was a terrific run off the speed last start and was one of the best swoopers of the meeting, charging through the line late. Sectionally he was very good and can potentially get nice cover from this draw and represent very good value.
Confidence: Low Rated Place Price: $2.50
Race 7 – 2240m Swift Signs Pace
7/8 Intrusion – Liam Older/Craig Turnbull
Intrusion has relished his time here in Victoria, knocking up a terrific strike rate. The faster the races, the more he likes it, often letting down with a strong finishing burst. He gets that set-up here, and if he gets the luck to come wide off a trail, he will power home late.
Confidence: Low Rated Place Price: $2.20
Race 8 – 2240m Aldebaran Park Trot
8/4 Hilltop Hugh – Chris Alford/Chris Lang & Sonia Mahar
Hilltop Hugh had his chance as a short-priced favourite last week, but considering he has not missed a place and is a G1 winner from last season, he won’t find an easier race than this one. He can lead and looks likely to face little pressure in the run to show his class.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $1.70
