The western Victorian-based brothers Terry, Peter, Garry, David and Paul Lewis have experienced a purple patch with their breed over the past month or so.
Peter, a Torquay hotelier whose horses carry the ‘Luv’ prefix, bred Luva Scrap, who won at Melton last Saturday, and the talented two-year-old Luvtobeuptome, a heat winner of the Vicbred Super Series and a close second in the $100,000 Final.
Luvtobeuptome will be one of the leading fancies for the Group 2 $100,000 Breeders Crown Final at Melton on Saturday night.
Peter will offer a Pebble Beach half-brother to Luva Scrap and a Captaintreacherous half-brother to last Saturday’s Melton winner Alot Like Louie and the exported Bondi Lockdown ($572,998) at the Nutrien Equine Melbourne Yearling Sale next April.
Terry, the president of the Horsham Harness Racing Club, and his Group 1 winning training brother David, bred and race Browniesatmidnight, a winner at the Horsham Cup meeting on Sunday, as well as the brilliant first-up Horsham three-year-old winner Sweetkindofmagic.
David is best known as the trainer of the family owned stars Abettorpunt, the winner of five Group 1/Listed events, Amajorjo, Lewisienna Jo and Master Of Disguise.
Paul, the former president of the Hamilton club, bred and races Roadmaster, a recent winner at Terang and a neck second at Melton on Saturday, while Garry part-owned the Victoria Trotters Derby and Oaks and Bill Collins Sprint winner Pink Galahs.
The 2019 SA Oaks winner Wellsaidlucy, the brilliant but ill-fated Fides and the multiple Group winner Bettor Isolate were among other smart performers raced by Paul.
“We got into the sport through our father David and his brother Tuppy, who both trained pacers successfully from Ultima in the 1960’s,” Paul said.
And, the family bond spawned by harness racing more than 50 years ago has continued and prospered.
“The family bought one of the 10 slots in the inaugural Running of the Bulls Slot race at Birchip next March,” Paul said.
“We’re now on the lookout for a suitable horse to fill the slot.”
Ballarat breeders Bruce and Vicki Edward bred two heat winners of the Breeders Crown in the two-year-old filly Bettor Beach and the three-year-old colt Captain Perfect.
Faith Full, the tough winner of the Horsham Trotters Cup, was bred by Ararat enthusiast Lyndon Turner.
The two-year-old The Golden Hook, who posted his maiden success at Charlton, was bred and is owned by Kevin and Carol Riseley, who raced his sire Lennytheshark throughout his brilliant career.
