Budding trainer Patrick Tomkinson chalked up a maiden metropolitan success when Isolation outsprinted his rivals in the Hygain Edge Pace at Melton on Saturday night.
Driver Taylor Youl gave Isolation ($9) the run of the race behind the leader before easing away from the pegs in the home straight and the son of Bettors Delight quickly reeled in the $1.55 favourite Lougle to score by five metres.
“It feels very, very good,” Tomkinson said.
“I was super nervous, I’m always nervous and it’s just awesome to be able to race here on a Saturday night to get my first metro winner.”
The 38-year-old Tomkinson admitted the win exceeded expectations.
“I wasn’t expecting it. I thought he’d probably have another couple of goes at this to feel the speed, but we got a good draw and a bit of luck and we got there,” he said.
The nine-year-old arrived at Tomkinson’s stable in March last year.
“We’ve had him just over a year now,” he said. “He’s improving all the time.”
