Rebecca Morrissey has been involved in harness racing most of her life, but few moments would top the one she experienced at Tabcorp Park Melton over the weekend.
The 47-year-old horsewoman prepared the troublesome yet talented filly Wish Upona Dream for a remarkable victory in the Aldebaran Park Lunar Lass 3YO Trotters Classic during the all-squaregaiting card on Saturday night.
After snagging back early from a wide gate, Michael Bellman sent the daughter of Wishing Stone to the death seat at the bell and asked her for the supreme effort approaching the home straight. She broke and appeared to lose all winning chance, but regained her composure and surged to the line to score by over a metre.
“I am so overwhelmed, I'm so thrilled,” Morrissey said in an emotional interview with Nikkita Ross on TrotsVision.
“Tonight she has put it all together and I'm just absolutely rapt.
“All the way through the race tonight I was just saying to Mick 'just talk to her, just talk to her' and when she put in those couple of rough ones in exactly the same spot as Bendigo (February 23) I thought oh no.
“But she regained herself and got down and going. I'm just over the moon.”
Morrissey, who trains from her 20-acre property at Longlea, said Wish Upona Dream even pulled a shoe during the $30,000 event, adding to the quality of the performance.
“She's very determined in so many ways,” Morrissey, who works full-time for Telstra, said.
“She's got the most unbelievable quirky nature about her. You just can't help but love her.
“She'll bite, she'll kick, she's a typical filly. She's just a real handful to manage. At the races, though, she just turns into this ultra-professional little horse.
“You would never think she's such the handful that she is.”
While Saturday night’s Group 2 triumph was just the third Morrissey has registered as an official trainer, she’s got a long and successful history in the sport.
She grew up involved in harness racing and played a major hand in preparing handy squaregaiters Barneys Invasion – a winner of the Stawell Trotters Cup and J A Connelly Crystal Bucket at Echuca in 2011 – and Waikare Sun, who finished with nine career victories.
Wish Upona Dream, who was bred and is part-owned by Morrissey, has now won two races from 17 career starts.
