Ray Harvey is one step away from a harness racing fairy tale and Nikkita Ross caught up with the 66-year-old hobby trainer to tell the heart-warming story of his rise to fame with The Penny Drops ahead of tonight's Inter Dominion Trotting Championship Grand Final.

Ross visited Harvey at Darren Hancock’s Pheasants Nest stables, where the six-year-old gelding has stayed during his ID21 campaign.

The horse has provided 15 of Harvey’s 22 career winners as a trainer and is well fancied to take out one of the sport’s most iconic races at Tabcorp Park Menangle this evening.

“It really is the Melbourne Cup for the standardbreds and to (win) that with just one or two horses (in my stable), I'd be pretty happy about it,” he said.
