‘She was a sweetheart of a horse’: Aiken pays tribute to late mare

Connections of Aldebaran Crescent are mourning the passing of the Group 1-winning trotting mare after a short battle with illness.

The much-loved squaregaiter sadly died last Friday after deteriorating badly from what trainer David Aiken described as a “neurological virus”.

Aiken said it was a tough time for everyone involved with the mare, who enjoyed a fruitful career on the track and was destined for the breeding barn.

“We’ve had her since a yearling and she had a few little issues early days, but came out the other end just a really good mare and had a good record,” Aiken said.

“She was one of our favourites. She was a sweetheart of a horse, she never had a mean bone in her body.

“There was a syndicate of people that had a lot of fun and she gave us a lot of joy.”

Aldebaran Crescent, a mare by Majestic Son out of Maori Road, started her career in mid-2017 and raced 77 times for 14 wins. She won over $200,000 in prizemoney, with her crowning glory being the Group 1 victory in the 2022 Breed For Speed Gold Series Final at Melton.

“She was just a great syndicate horse and a nice horse with it,” Aiken said.

“She was well bred, good gaited, ticked a lot of boxes and we were really looking forward to breeding with her.”

Aldebaran Crescent’s other career highlights included Group 3 wins in the La Coocaracha at Menangle and in the Group 3 True Roman at Maryborough.
