Tonight’s Shepparton Harness Racing Club meeting will shine the light on Motor Neurone Disease.
To promote MND Victoria and raise awareness of their work, the number one horse in each of the 11 races will carry MND promotional colours.
A number of on-course initiatives will also raise funds for the organization, headlined by double-seater sulky rides with Harness Racing Victoria HERO Program Ambassadors Smudge Bromac and Waikare Aristocrat.
Smudge Bromac wears dual ambassadorial hats – the popular pacer is also a face of MND, in memory of his former part owner John Brain who passed away as a result of the disease.
This evening’s meeting features the running of the John Brain Memorial, as well as the Shepparton Trotters’ Cup.
MND is the name given to a group of diseases in which the nerve cells (neurons) controlling the muscles that enable a human to move, speak, breathe and swallow, fail to work normally.
With no nerves to activate them, muscles gradually weaken and waste. The patterns of weakness vary from person to person.
At any given time in Victoria, MND affects around 400 people. There is no known cure.
MND Victoria provides and promotes the best possible care and support for people living with MND and funds MND research.
The organisation has two key mottos: “Until there’s a cure, there’s care” and “Never give up”.
The MND promotion is proudly supported by major sponsors the HRV HERO Program, Shepparton Harness Racing Club, Hygain Feeds (Rebecca Cartwright) and Maree Tomkinson.
