Sisterly rivalry ignites as Wight outduels Manning at Terang

Sisterly love was nowhere to be seen in Terang last night as Michelle Wight and Kerryn Manning battled out the second event.

Hitting the lead approaching the final bend, Wight became all-the-more determined as she glanced over her shoulder to see an all-too-familiar face issuing a challenge.

“I looked across and thought ‘Kez is going to do it again’ as she has done it so often,” Wight said. “Then when I saw her looming up outside me I was worried for a few strides.

“Sisterly love was certainly a non-issue at that stage as I wanted to beat her.”

To Wight’s delight, her pacer – Nosweetsforyou – responded to her vigorous driving to break clear for a nine-metre win from the Manning-driven Double The Hunter.

A Rocknroll Jet was a half-head away third in 2:00.2 over 2180 metres.

“If ever a horse deserved a win it is her,” Wight said. “She runs her share of seconds, including four-in-a-row last time in.

“She is not that fast, so has to be tough, which means she does it the hard way and is therefore open for a swooper.

“She has to make her own luck in the race by turning it into a staying contest, which means she definitely earns her wins.”

Nosweetsforyou’s success had an additional reason for Wight to celebrate, it was the horsewoman’s 250th training victory.

“I knew I was getting close, so to get that win is pretty good,” Wight said. “Doing it while beating Kez makes it even better!”
