The Week Ahead: Showdowns galore on stunning semi-finals night

The run to royalty continues at Tabcorp Park Melton this Saturday on what promises to be a magical night of Breeders Crown Series semi-final action.

Second round qualifiers for the two-year-old and three-year-old pacers will take the spotlight, with eight races on the 11-event card providing a direct path through to Group 1 finals back at the same track on November 20.

Emma Stewart-trained fillies won three of the four two-year-old heats at Maryborough on Sunday. Irish Black Label (pictured) and Playing Up will clash in one of the semis on Saturday night, while stablemate Rich Beauty is set to take on the other heat winner Amore Vita, who is trained by Nathan Purdon.

In the two-year-old boys’ division, Hes Charlies Angel (Charlene Gusman) and Brutally Handsome (AJ and BJ Tindale) both caused heat upsets and will lock horns in a semi-final battle, while Andy Gath’s star Catch A Wave takes his place in the other.

Stewart trio Tough Tilly, Beach Music and Joanna all won three-year-old fillies’ heats on Friday night at Bendigo and have drawn to clash in a mouth-watering semi-final this weekend, while high-profile beaten pair Ladies In Red (Stewart) and Bettor Twist (Purdon) battle it out in the other.

Stewart produced Act Now and Beyond Delight to win heats of the colts and geldings’ series in Bendigo and they’ll meet in the first semi on Saturday, while Michael Stanley-trained Rock N Roll Doo looks one of the key players in the second semi after also prevailing at Lord’s Raceway.

Three free-for-all events make up the 11-race card at Melton, where fully vaccinated owners and patrons will again be permitted trackside.

The Breeders Crown Series also ramps up in Maryborough on Thursday with heats for the two-year-old and three-year-old squaregaiters, and qualifiers in each of those races will join the pacers on a bumper night of Group 1 racing back at Melton on November 20.

Eight elite level finals will be decided with almost $1.5 million in prizemoney being handed out across the evening.
