As a son of Shes An Image, Hes A Hammer came with a hefty price tag as a yearling, being picked up by owner Domenic Martello for $55,000 at the 2020 Australasian Premier Trotting Sale.
Shes An Image, of course, had been a star on the track, winning 20 races including the Victoria and NSW Oaks and the Vicbred 2YO Final for $233,824 in earnings.
And at stud, she has left winners in Evas Image and Builder Bob with her first two foals.
Hes A Hammer began his career at the end of the two-year-old season owing to a paddock injury.
But the Andover Hall colt is certainly making up for lost time as a three-year-old, winning twice with a second from four starts.
In his latest appearance, the colt outsprinted his rivals in a heat of the Aldebaran Park Vicbred Platinum Home Grown Classic at Bendigo, rating a slick 1:58.9min for 1650m with the last 800m in 59sec.
“We’ve always had a good opinion of him,” driver Josh Aiken said. “He’s got a great attitude.”
Aiken said the horse will next be aimed at the Group 1 $50,000 Home Grown Classic Final at Melton on Saturday, March 19.
“We’ll then give him a freshen-up and set him for the APTS 3YO Series, the Breeders Crown and Vicbred,” he stated.
A Father Patrick half-brother to Hes A Hammer will be offered by Chris and Haley Lang, of Lang Bloodstock, as Lot 237 at the Nutrien Equine Melbourne sale on April 3.
Other APTS sale graduates to win this week have been Constantinople (Yarra Valley), Make Mine Muscle (Globe Derby Park) and Melpark Magic (Albion Park).
