Craig Rail found something to Exciter on the Victorian trials circuit this week, with a Kerryn Manning debutant and a trotter among the eye-catchers.

STAWELL 21/05/20

Trial 1: - BIG TOM BART (Gotta Go Cullect – Karamea Dreamin 1.59.3, $37,226) is an unraced gelding for trainer Kerryn Manning. He is related to four winners including Zibibbo (1.52.9), Miss Dreamin (1.54.3) and Saucy Dreams (1.57.2) and he showed he has inherited some of that ability with a comfortable trial victory over the nicely bred gelding TEDDY RUNKLE (Rock N Roll Heaven – Magic Z Tam USA ($83,819). KEAYANG KOOKAI finished in third position with LETTUCE NHEAVEN (Rock N Roll Heaven – Lettucereason 1.55.9, $180,073) coming in last of the four runners.

BLACKBOOKER: - Big Tom Bart

Trial 2: - NINE DIAMONDS hasn’t raced since June 2019 and was runner up in a race at Mildura during her last campaign. She was formerly with trainer Barry Dunn and is now being prepared by Grant Campbell. She was able to win her trial narrowly from KEAYANG SHADY with KEMPSEYS DELIGHT being in third position. The unraced 3yo gelding ZERO DOUBT (Shadyshark Hanover – Problem Solved 1.59.0, $27,361) finished last of the four runners.

Trial 3: - TIC TACT has been performing better at the trials than she has in her three Victorian starts since transferring from Queensland and she took out the third trial by ten metres. The former South Australian trained pacer TERRA ROSSA finished in second position with COOL SITA finishing third. The unraced juvenile gelding MEROLAMAGIC (Somebeachsomewhere – Sterita 1.55.9, $145,241) was last of the four to greet the judge.

Trial 4: - Only two horses competed in the final trial with the Laurie Young trained trotter ALLAWART BOB, which has only had two starts since October, defeating the unraced juvenile trotter GOODTIME FRED (Tennotrump – Jewel of the Night 2.6.0, $72,065).

CRANBOURNE 23/05/20

Trial 1: - SOVEREIGN MINX settled down in third position before moving to the outside and rolling to the lead at the 1400m. She was the class trotter of the field and was able to dash away and score easily. ALL OVER THE STARS jumped in second position, got to the lead at the 1700m then took cover behind SOVEREIGN MINX. He came away from the inside at the 300m mark to issue a challenge but broke stride on the turn and was able to get back into a trot in time to maintain second position. The juvenile gelding SOVEREIGN TIGER led early before being overtaken by the two experienced trotters and ended up being three back on the markers. He tried hard for third and the other juvenile in the event FREE STARR (Majestic Son – Amelia Pond 2.7.1, $14,090) was last of the four runners throughout.

Trial 2: - ICANMOTOR (Somebeachsomewhere – Blue Seelster 1.56.2, $54,905) trailed the leader throughout and moved away from the inside on the home turn before drawing away to win comfortably. SUPRISE WRITER (Sportswriter – Itz No Surprisesthere 1.58.0, $216,900) followed behind ICANMOTOR and worked home from three back on the markers to finish in second position. WRITTEN COURAGE (Sportswriter – Reply With Courage) was fifth on the markers, moved up without cover from the 700m mark and broke stride momentarily on the home turn. He balanced up and finished in third position. NITE NITE MISTER was four back on the markers throughout and finished fourth ahead of FINAL COUNTDOWN (Auckland Reactor – Ima Blue Bell 2.1.6, $13,799) (6 back markers, 1-1 at 700m) and the early leader HESABEACHBOY (Sunshine Beach – Bella Belucci) ran in last of the six runners.

Trial 3: - STAY FOCUSED (Angus Hall – Star Spangled Rama 2.4.6, $35,725) settled three back on the markers and came away from the inside at the 300m when she trotted home to win comfortably from MASTER SPARK (Majestic Son – Arcupandgo 2.4.9, $16,140), which showed good gate speed to lead but raced keenly throughout the middle stages. CHAMPAGNE RIVER trailed the leader and never peeled to the outside at any stage, going to the line untouched with CAPTAIN MCCRAW finishing at the tail of the field after settling down last of the four and breaking stride with 50m remaining.

Trial 4: - PERSHING trailed the leader and was clear at the 200m when she hit the lead and was able to hold off WILL AND ANDY to win narrowly. WILL AND ANDY settled third on the markers before finding the one out and one back trail at the bell. He finished off reasonably well to run second. PEPE OLE was sixth on the markers and was held up for a run at a vital stage before working into a distant third. GEE HEE ROCKS was fifth early but moved into the death seat at the 1100m. He battled into fourth ahead of TYABB WONDER, which set the speed. ITZOK TO ROCK settled down last, moved into the one wide lane in the final circuit (1-2) and came out three horses wide on the home turn. He finished sixth with WUNDURRA (4 back markers then 3 back markers) seeing them all safely home.

Trial 5: - MY SUPERANNUATION settled three back on the markers and made his move by coming out three horses wide from the 300m. He was able to score in a close finish. END GAME settled four back on the markers and finished off well via the sprint lane for second with ITZ LONGTALL SALLY in third position after being five back on the inside and popping off the markers at the 300m mark. The former New South Wales trained pacer ALIMONIE led and finished fourth with ILLAWONG LORD coming in last after trailing the leader throughout.

Trial 6: - OHOKA MAXIMUS took out the final trial after dashing to the lead in the early stages and setting up a slow tempo. He held off the late challenge from DANSBRO, which trailed the leader and used the sprint lane. HEAVENS SHOWGIRL settled down last of the four runners, sprinted quickly up to second from the quarter pole and just peaked a little late but was still maintaining her ground in third position. ROCKNROLL PEARL wasn’t too far away in fourth position and she was starting to make up some ground at the end without being pushed at any stage.

MILDURA 24/05/20

Trial 1: - MAJOR MAL showed good gate speed to lead and ran along at a very genuine tempo. He established a good break in the final circuit and continued to build on that lead over the latter stages, winning impressively by 40m. SIEDRA CALEB has recently returned to Victoria and is now with trainer Reece Moore. She trailed MAJOR MAL throughout and finished a distant second. OLLIES MOLLY settled fifth on the markers and moved away from the inside to race without cover from the 600m. She finished third with KENSINGTON MAID running fourth after being three back on the inside throughout. ILLAWONG PARRIS was without cover in the early stages before dropping back to be fourth back on the markers and finished fifth ahead of AUSSIE CASH, which was checked and had to veer wide early, losing approximately 15m then settling in sixth position. NO EMOTION broke stride on the first turn and finished seventh while IM JIMMIES GIRL (Shadow Play – Priddy Good 2.0.1, $5,125) was tailed off throughout after beginning slowly.

Trial 2: - WARATAH BEACH raced without cover early, gained the lead at the 1200m and was able to score softly at the end. SHADYS PURSUIT settled fifth on the markers, broke stride momentarily at the 1400m mark but didn’t lose any ground then moved away from the inside at the 300m and finished off well for second. ARTISTICBUTNAUGHTY led out then took a trail and finished in third position ahead of USAGE, which was slow out and momentarily in the one out and one back trail before being left without cover when WARATAH BEACH ran to the lead. ALWAYS A CELEBRITY trailed the leader before being three back on the inside and was able to move into the one out and one back trail half way down the back straight. He finished fifth ahead of TELL US WE DREAM (7th markers, 1-2) and THE SPIN PROFESSOR, which left a trailing position to come out three horses wide from the quarter pole.

Trial 3: - A ROCKNROLL JET started off in third position and was able to angle into the one out and one back trail from the 1200m. He hooked out three horses wide from the home turn and sprinted well clear off his rivals at the end. FIRE SAFE began quickly to find the lead and backed off the tempo mid-race. She finished second in front SAFARI ROSE, which settled in fourth behind moving up without cover with a mile remaining. DROMANA BEACH trailed the leader and finished fourth while DIAMONDS FOR ALADY dropped off the pack with 1200m remaining.

Trial 4: - SMYNANNA MICKEY appeared to be the class runner of the field and was able to lead throughout and score with plenty in reserve. RAINBOW RAIN settled three back on the markers and moved through to trail the leader on the home turn. He finished second ahead of CASHWRANGS SMOKER, which put in a good run after coming out wide from last at the 600m. GENUINE EXCUSE trailed the leader and moved away from the markers with 400m remaining. He finished fourth with JUST SAYING (4 back markers) running in last of the five runners.

MARYBOROUGH 24/05/20

Trial 1: - BENEATH THE SHADOW (Shadow Play – Clearwater Isle) began quickly to lead, took a trail then moved away from the markers again at the 500m so it was a handy performance to hold on and get the prize. VAN GOGH (Modern Art – Hotgossip) ended up being three back on the markers and pursued BENEATH THE SHADOW from the 300m mark. He made a late lunge but just failed. CALVERT HOT SHOT worked to the lead at the 1800m and finished third in front of FINAL BOW (Bitobliss – Georgina Bow), which was last throughout and was under pressure with a lap remaining.

Trial 2: - IMA CALVERT ROSE showed good gate speed to lead before the first turn, set up a slow tempo and just prevailed from SAMS A YANK (Muscles Yankee – Flash And Flair), which left his position of being three back on the markers to race without cover from the 1400m. He did travel roughly with 500m remaining but he rallied in the straight. CLAUDYS ICEMAN (Pegasus Spur – All Finesse) was last early before moving into the one out and one back trail behind SAMS A YANK and battled on well for third. TIARA STRIDE (Amore Stride – Nitengale Stride USA) trailed the leader, started racing roughly with a lap remaining and broke stride at the half mile marker.

Trial 3: - LUCY SAWYER (Tennotrump – Annies Last 2.9.2, $4,508) began quickly to lead, set up a slow tempo and was untroubled in scoring from IGNITING STRIDE (Peak – Rosemaryz Luck), which trailed the leader throughout. CANADIAN ALM was last of the three runners throughout and came to the outside on the home turn but failed to pick up in the straight.

Trial 4: - KYVALLEY FRANK stepped away quickly from the standing start to find the lead, enjoyed a nice run in transit and did everything right to win over the juvenile trotter MUSTANG KELLY, which trailed and broke stride with 400m remaining.

BENDIGO 24/05/20

Trial 1: - REGAL ASSASSIN has returned from Queensland and is back with trainer Keith Cotchin. He pushed forward to find the lead, pulled hard and raced away to an easy victory. FETCH IT trailed the leader throughout and finished a distant second. CHER AMI was third throughout and MISS BROOMFIELD (Muscle Mass – Miss Impromptu 2.6.0, $27,838) finished last of the four runners. The field finished in exactly the same order in which they started.

Mile Rate: - 2.2.2            Final Half: - 59.4               Margins: - 18m, 8m

Trial 2: - VALENTIVE BRAVE was on her best behaviour and settled three back on the markers before moving up without cover at the bell. She hit the front on the home turn and proved too strong in the run to the finish. EMERGING TALENT trailed the leader and moved away from the markers on the home turn. She chased valiantly and ran a game second with ROCKNROLL EYES in third position. ROCKNROLL EYES settled fourth on the markers, moved into the one out and one back trail and dropped off at the 600m but he came again at the finish. In the end, he ran a very nice race for third. AN ALLIANCE tried to lead all of the way but faded late and finished in fourth position. ADELAIDE BAY was again on his worst behaviour and galloped at the start, losing approximately 40m in the early stages. He was able to beat one runner to the line, which was GOTTA GO YA HU (5 back markers).

Trial 3: - EXCITER settled three back on the inside, gained a run through the middle and finished off strongly to win nicely in fast time. SUTTER STAR began quickly and tried to lead throughout. He set up a genuine tempo and battled on quite well in the latter stages. GONE AND FORGOTTEN trailed the leader and came away from the inside at the 300m. She wanted to hang out on the home turn and ended up being out three horses wide in the latter stages. She finished a distant third ahead of MITTYACTOR (Auckland Reactor – Our Millie Mac 2.0.4, $4,900) which settled fifth on the markers, moved away from the inside at the 700m and broke stride momentarily half way down the back straight. He finished fourth ahead of LESVOS LAD (Jet Laag – Molly Ridge), which settled four back on the markers and was under pressure at the 600m mark.

BLACKBOOKER: - Exciter

Trial 4: - TOM KAT raced without cover early, found the lead at the 1600m then took a trail shortly afterwards. He was held up for a run at a vital stage but he accelerated fast via the sprint lane and he scored very softly at the end. REALY UNDER FIRE showed gate speed to lead, took a trail and was shuffled back on the markers mid-race. He moved into the one out and one back trail at the 400m and came out three horses wide approaching the home turn so he ran a handy race for second. MISS MORAINE was three back on the markers, moved away from the inside at the 800m and boxed on well for third. NUCLEAR NIKKY gained a one out and one back trail, progressed forward to find the lead at the 1300m and was overtaken in the final stages. FABULOUS KAYJAY (Art Major – Shortys Treasure 1.58.8, $24,110) trailed the leader in the early stages, was shuffled back on the markers mid-race, pulled hard and ended up in fifth position. FIERYJEFF (Grinfromeartoear – Fiery Package) broke stride at the start, lost approximately 25m in the early stages and never tacked onto the group.

Mile Rate: - 2.1.0            Final Half: - 60.8               Margins: - 4m, 1m

Trial 5: - CARIJOY was without cover in the early stages, restrained into fourth position then gained a one out and one back trail before coming out three horses wide on the turn. He was able to get home best and scored comfortably but in slow time. OUR LITTLE GODDESS (Art Major – Localize) trailed the leader in the early stages, moved into the death seat at the 700m and battled on well for second. She went to the line under a hard hold. JOHNNYS CASH (Bettors Delight – Tess Franco) attempted to lead all of the way and finished third with SAINT WIN (Art Major – Torridon 2.1.2, $39,325) being in fourth after gaining the perfect trip (3 back markers, behind leader). ABITOFDELIGHT (Bitobliss – Karim Vale 2.1.4, $4,463) settled at the tail of the field from a wide draw and was last throughout.

Trial 6: - SPEAK TO LUCKY (Artspeak – Frances Lombo) began quickly to lead, set up a slow tempo and broke stride momentarily at the 400m but remained in front and was able to hold on and win. ABBIE LINCOLN (Art Major – Jaz Equity 1.57.5, $54,023) trailed the leader, was checked when SPEAK TO LUCKY broke stride at the quarter pole and lost five metres before recovering into second position. SPORTING MODEL (Art Major – All Eyes On Me 1.51.0, $349,926) was last of the three runners throughout and came out three horses wide on the home turn.

Mile Rate: - 2.4.6            Final Half: - 58.8               Margins: - 6m, 3m

Trial 7: - HIGHWAY HUNTSMAN was able to zoom to the lead in the early stages and won the trial easily after his two opponents both broke stride in the latter stages. He was always going to win the trial but he won by a greater margin due to the errors being made. GRAEMES WISH trailed the leader and raced roughly at the 700m mark then again at the quarter pole before eventually breaking stride with 200m remaining. ECHO MAGIC (Pegasus Spur – Star of Jordaine 2.3.3, $67,658) settled three back on the markers and broke stride on the home turn.

Trial 8: - DELAROSE began quickly and was able to dash to the lead in the early stages. She rolled along at an even tempo and was able to safely hold her rivals at bay. JUST OSCAR settled three back on the markers, moved away from the markers at the 600m and chased hard to finish a game second. DECLAN HENRY settled last on the markers and raced roughly in the latter stages, finishing a distant third. TRUMPIT LIL trailed the leader and tired over the latter stages, dropping out to the tail of the field.

BALLARAT 25/05/20

Trial 1: - FIGHTNFURY (Bettors Delight – The Waratah 1.57.9, $40,861) settled three back on the markers, moved away from the inside with 300m remaining and came out three horses wide on the home turn when he sprinted home too well. SEACHANGE (A Rocknroll Dance – Seaside Beauty 1.55.7, $27,900) trailed the leader and moved away from the markers at the 300m mark. He moved up to hit the lead momentarily before FIGHTNFURY gunned him down late. ROCK N ROLL DOO (Rock N Roll Heaven – Long Liva Lana) settled five back on the inside and finished off nicely in the latter stages to finish a handy third. MISSBLISSFULLBEACH began very quickly in the early stages to find the lead, ran along at an even tempo and finished in fourth with MAJOR MISCHIEF (Major In Art – Zolong 2.2.1, $24,504) finishing at the tail of the field after settling in fourth position and coming away from the markers at the 500m mark.

Trial 2: - FLYING JO settled three back on the inside, moved into the one wide lane at the bell (1-2) and came out four horses wide at the 250m mark. She finished off strongly and won nicely at the end. BONAVISTA BOY was slow away and settled fourth on the inside. He moved away from the inside to race without cover at the 1100m and boxed on well at the finish for second. GOTTA SMUDGE (Grinfromeartoear – Primanproper Lombo 2.3.6, $5,075) led out, took a trail and ended up being three back on the markers before moving into the one out and one back trail at the bell. He came out three horses wide on the home turn and he battled on reasonably well for third. SOHO NOTORIOUS settled last of the six runners, pulled hard during the middle stages and finished off solidly to run in fourth position. KRATOS POWER (Well Said – Virtuosy) raced without cover early, gained the lead at the 1800m then took a trail at the 1500m. He finished fifth in front of CARRAMAR CEE SMITH, which was driven aggressively to find the lead just past the mile marker and tired late.

Trial 3: - COMMON COURTESY trailed the leader, was held up for a run at a vital stage and burst home late when a game winner over AMERICAN ALLI. AMERICAN ALLI gained the perfect trail in the one out and one back position and came out three horses wide at the 300m. She looked the winner in the straight but COMMON COURTESY came at her fast late. BANKROLL (Artistic Fella – Banking On You) settled three back on the inside and raced keenly in the run. He worked into third ahead of TREVEAN, which raced without cover, broke stride momentarily with 200m remaining and recovered to finish in fourth position. ERNIESON was last on the markers early and moved into the running lane at the bell (1-2). He finished ahead of the early leader VALLA REINE.

Mile Rate: - 2.2.4            Final Half: - 58.7               Margins: - Head, 8m

Trial 4: - STRUVE began quickly to find the lead and rolled along at a reasonable tempo before sprinting home quickly in the final stages. He dashed home in a sizzling final quarter of 26.9 seconds and scored by a large margin. FRIENDS settled three back on the inside, pulled hard and moved away from the inside on the home turn. He did well to pick up second in front of GO IN STYLE, which trailed the leader and TRINITY DREAMING was last throughout.

Mile Rate: - 2.0.9            Final Half: - 56.4               Margins: - 10m, Long Neck

Trial 5: - Only two horses contested the fifth trial event and DON PIERRE was able to pick up the victory over LIFTNTORQUE, which attempted to lead throughout. LIFTNTORQUE did race very keenly in the preliminary.

Mile Rate: - 2.0.5            Final Half: - 57.4               Margin: - 2m

Trial 6: - It was another trial field of two horses with RIGHT OF REPLY (Majestic Son – Alta Rihannah 1.59.1, $154,437) winning over ROHAAN (Orlando Vici – Class Of Her Own 2.0.7, $45,025). RIGHT OF REPLY pushed forward to lead, hung out on the home turn but kicked on strongly in the latter stages. ROHAAN gained the inside run on the home turn and punched through but just failed to pick up the winner on the line.

Mile Rate: - 2.11.0          Final Half: - 61.0               Margin: - ½ head

Trial 7: - ARAIGNEE FLAIR settled three back on the inside, moved away from the markers at the 350m and sprinted home fast to get the prize. ME PAT MALONE attempted to lead all of the way and wasn’t fully extended in the run to the judge. MEGEVE (The Best Madrik  - The Kahmotion) trailed the leader and broke stride at the 250m, losing all chance.

Mile Rate: - 2.5.1            Final Half: - 60.5               Margins: - 3m, 40m

Trial 8: - SHIPS SUCCESS led throughout in the field of two horses with COLUMBIAS DEECEE (Bacardi Lindy – Columbias Gindin 2.6.3, $41,475) trailing throughout.

Mile Rate: - 2.21.2          Final Half: - 64.5               Margin: - 8m

KILMORE 28/05/20

Trial 1: - SONNYBOY (Majestic Son – Sullanders Pride) is a promising juvenile trotter for trainer Jack Sullivan. He broke stride just after the start losing 20m, got through to trail the leader then gained the front when ASTRO (Love You – Auravale 2.8.2, $30,650) broke stride at the 900m mark. He was able to roll along at a genuine tempo in the last lap and held off the challenge of the 3yo trotter GOOBER in the run to the finish. GOOBER started from the handicap of 30m but he had his chance after trailing SONNYBOY throughout the entire trial. ASTRO doesn’t seem to like the noise of the bell. He dashed to the front early but broke stride with a lap remaining. He has galloped several times at the same point near the winning post with a lap remaining over the past few weeks. He galloped again at the 600m mark but was able to hold down third position. ALDEBARAN LOVISA (Readily Express – Excellent Boko SWE $21,133) broke stride at the start and lost approximately 100m. She finished in fourth position ahead of KYVALLEY HACIENDA (Andover Hall – Kyvalley Lily), which galloped and missed approximately 60m early with TRUMPIT LIL also missing the start by a large margin and coming in at the tail of the field.

Trial 2: - PANTZUP was able to step to the lead and set up a slow tempo. She turned for home about two lengths in front and was able to hold on to win the trial. ALDEBARAN CRESCENT was a very good effort in second position. He settled three back on the inside, used the sprint lane and finished off fast. It looked like he was going to win the trial but he may have switched off by looking at the winning post as he seemed to ease in momentum and pricked his ears on the line. The pacer ASHINCHARGE took on the trotters and finished last of the three after trailing the leader throughout.

BLACKBOOKER: - Aldebaran Crescent

Trial 3: - The star trotter WOBELEE won the trial softly after settling down last and working into the race in the one out and one back trail from the 500m. He came to the outside on the home turn and never looked like losing. CREDON STAR led out, took a trail and moved into the death seat at the 650m mark. To his credit, he really kicked back strongly after being headed by WOBELEE in the early stages of the home straight. AWESOME REACTOR finished in third position after racing three back on the markers for the majority of the trial. GIGIS GRINNER settled down in third then made a move to run to the lead at the 1600m. Trial 4: - MAJOR NORTIE began quickly to lead and ran home in fast final sectionals to win the trial. STIR ME UP (Auckland Reactor – Magical Sue) continued his run of very good trial form with a fast finishing second. He settled three back on the markers, was held up for a run at a vital stage and flew home late in a last quarter of 28.3 seconds. ONE TWO MANY (Captaintreacherous – Always Lacking 1.56.4, $23,515) finished in third position after settling down last and moving into the one out and one back trail at the 600m. FIVE STAR SHARK (Four Starzzz Shark – Forest Charm 2.3.3, $9,900) was fourth after leading out then taking a trail with HELIKAON (Rock N Roll Heaven – Dazed And Confused 1.56.8, $172,444) finishing at the tail after racing greenly in fourth early and moving into the death seat at the 600m mark.

Trial 5: - AMOUR FRATERNELLE (Repeat Love – Mybrotherwasastar) appears to be still learning and should keep improving with the benefit of experience. She trotted roughly occasionally in last position but she finished off well via the sprint lane to get the prize. KEEPING IT CLASSY made a bold bid to try and lead throughout and FETCH IT wasn’t far away in third position after trailing the leader throughout.

Trial 6: - CASINO BARRY (Heston Blue Chip – Casino Princess 1.59.7, $31,715) settled three back on the markers and used the sprint lane to drive through and win in a slowly run trial. ANDRES trailed the leader before moving up without cover from the 300m and finished second. RUESLAN (Courage Under Fire – Marfusha) tried to lead throughout and ended up finishing in third. He did go to the line under a hard hold so he had a bit in reserve. COURTNEY KATARINA galloped in the score up and missed the start by approximately 40m. She tacked onto the group and did loom up out three horses wide on the home turn. She finished last of the four horses but was only beaten by 8m at the end.

Trial 7: - COMANDANTE began well then broke stride 30m after the start. He didn’t lose much ground and pressed forward to lead on the first turn. He then dominated the trial and put a large margin on his two rivals to score by 60m. ALDEBARAN TAKARA (Trixton – Aldebaran Turnpike USA 1.59.6, $20,625) finished in second position after leading out then taking a trail. She was a distant second on the home turn when she broke stride but she got going again to be the runner up. MAJOR MAX (Majestic Son – Nicky Newky 2.7.0, $18,305) broke stride at the start and lost approximately 40m in the early stages so he was last throughout.

Trial 8: - ALIENS EXIST (Courage Under Fire – Low Velocity 1.56.8, $121,993) led throughout and scored softly in the final trial. BUBBA MARTIN (Betterthancheddar – Rock Melody 2.2.6, $19,300) raced fiercely on the leaders back throughout and finished second with REGAL BREEZE (Sir Lincoln (Lincoln Royal) – Safari Breeze 1.55.4, $176,150) being last of the three runners.
