It's been a big week or two for Barnabys and that trend continued at Shepparton, when an unraced three-year-old caught the eye of trial watchers.
Stepping out for co-trainers Stephen O'Donoghue and Rebecca Bartley, Barnaby lost about 40 metres at the start and did a power of work to recover and run second.
It was a performance that caught the eye of Craig Rail and the form analyst has placed the Panpacificflight gelding into his Blackbook.
He wasn't the only O'Donoghue-Bartley runner to impress, with Western Sonador continuing "his exceptionally good trial form" ahead of a return to racing in the Simonds Homes Bendigo Pace on Saturday night.

SHEPPARTON 24/06/21
Trial 1: - JITTERBUG ARDEN was three horses wide in the early stages, pushed forward to find the lead at the 1700m and was able to coast to an easy victory in reasonable time. The performance of JITTERBUG ARDEN was very good but it was somewhat overshadowed by the giant effort of the second placed horse BARNABY (Panspacificflight – Art For Artsplace). He was out of position at the start and lost approximately 40m, settled last of the eight runners and sustained a long run out three horses wide from the 700m mark to pick up second. GIANNIS AY MACRAY was without cover approaching the first turn but raced very roughly and dropped onto the markers to be three back. He moved up without cover with 800m remaining and battled on fairly well at the finish. CRESCO GOLDIGGER trailed the leader early, got shuffled to four back on the markers and was held up for a run at a vital stage. He finished fourth with LIKAVEEEIGHT being in fifth after racing without cover in the first lap and locking wheels momentarily at the bell. ALLVICTORY HANOVER gained a one out and one back trail and finished sixth. THE DIAMOND KING settled down in seventh position (1-2), came out three horses wide at the 1300m and progressed forward. He wanted to hang in coming up to the bell lap, locked wheels with LIKEAVEEEIGHT and lost approximately 20m. He couldn’t recover and finished seventh. MAJOR ZONE was the last one home after beginning fast to lead before taking cover with 1700m remaining. Both THE DIAMOND KING and MAJOR ZONE are resuming from a spell at Yarra Valley on Monday.

BLACKBOOKER: - Barnaby
Trial 2: - ATEGO TITAN was able to lead throughout from the standing start. He stepped away well enough to lead but the beginning of the race was run at an extremely slow tempo. MONTANA MUSCLE angled in behind ATEGO TITAN and enjoyed a nice run all of the way. He came to the outside in the straight and unfortunately broke stride with 50m remaining but ATEGO TITAN appeared to be holding him safely at bay at the time. TRANQUIL BILL (Danny Bouchea – Aldebaran Stiltz 2.7.9, $9,074) was on his worst behaviour at the start and failed to get away from behind the tapes, refusing to budge as the strands released. He failed to complete the course.
Mile Rate: - 2.14.7 Final Half: - 62.1 Margins: - 15m, Retired

He battled on well for a distant second with LOCHINVAR CHARM (Art Major – Limerick Star $26,976) being the third horse across the line after coming from four back on the inside. LONGASULOVEME settled six back on the markers and finished ahead of ALICE ON THE BEACH, which settled a position ahead of her in the run. PRECIOUS TELL (Tell All – Precious Image 2.1.4, $35,643) began quickly to find the lead then took cover and couldn’t sustain the run. She was the last horse to finish with IDEAL COPY (American Ideal – Only A Copy 1.56.7, $11,030) coming to grief after pulling hard in the death seat early and choking down. The winner of the trial SMOOTH ROLLING is racing at Charlton on Monday but is taking on some handy performers.
Mile Rate: - 2.1.4 Final Half: - 60.6 Margins: - 15m, 13m

BACARDI WOOD began quickly and went with ITSARAPT early before surrendering the lead with 1800m of the journey remaining. He popped off the fence on the home turn and tried hard in the straight. SEEYOUINMYDREAMS (Muscle Hill – Figment 2.6.1, $44,003) was five back on the inside throughout and was able to defeat CMON CARL LEE, which was three back on the markers before moving into the death seat with 600m remaining.

GALACTIC GAL settled down sixth on the markers and moved up without cover with a half mile remaining. She battled on well for third with DEL PORT being fourth after settling three back on the markers. ALABAMA ICE (Hurrikane Kingcole – Shebas Rocket 2.1.6, $5,626) was fourth back on the markers and finished ahead of MY MATE COL, which settled down last and found the one out and one back trail behind GALACTIC GAL. LASTING BOND was the last horse to cross the line after racing without cover for the majority of the journey and yielding ground from the 600m mark. The third placed GALACTIC GAL resumes from a spell at Yarra Valley on Monday but is taking on a strong field in a heat of the Mares Sprint Championship.
Mile Rate: - 1.59.9 Final Half: - 61.4 Margins: - 3m, 5m
Trial 6: - WESTERN SONADOR continued his exceptionally good trial form with an all of the way victory in the final trial. He recorded fast time and he never appeared to be travelling at full speed at any part of the journey so it was an impressive display. He makes his return to the track at Bendigo tomorrow night and should give a bold showing. SPORT MENTAL showed good gate speed to lead, took a trail behind WESTERN SONADOR and kicked on well for second. DIVINE DIVA wrapped up her preparation for Bendigo on Saturday night with a third placed effort. She was three back on the markers and came to the outside on the home turn. She finished ahead of HEREHECOMES, which was fourth throughout and never peeled to the outside at any stage. Trial 3: - MANTHADEE is a tough mare when she is racing at her best form and will have gained some confidence in taking out the third trial. She dashed home in a quick final 800m so she might be able to show some improvement in her effort at Melton this evening. UNTITLED hasn’t raced since March but should be getting fitter after several recent trial performances. He finished second as a lead up to his effort at Bendigo tomorrow night ahead of HEZACROCWATCHER, which remains undefeated in three Australian starts and is now with trainer Tayla Nicholson. IMA DENNY TOO was last of the four runners to cross the line but wasn’t beaten by far in handy time. He makes his return to the track at Yarra Valley on Monday.

Trial 4: - The Rhys Nicholson prepared KURUN EXPRESS was able to win the third trial ahead of the former South Australian trained pacer DANCING FINN, which is now being trained by Amanda Grieve. STIR ME UP finished in third position and quickly backed up with a victory at Melton on Tuesday night. STAR ON BROADWAY (Rock N Roll Heaven – Broadway Play 1.57.3, $173,744) is a nicely bred filly for trainer Shannon McLean and finished fourth ahead of IM EUGENE. Trial 2: - STORMBOY STAR settled four back on the inside, used the sprint lane and ran home well for a good victory. LONGASULOVEME was without cover early, pushed forward to find the lead then raced fiercely in the middle stages. She shifted out under pressure on the home turn and finished fourth. He came to the outside at the 450m and was able to run home best at the end. He did break stride just past the winning post, which was a concern. MERCENARY began quickly and worked to the lead shortly after the start. He was trying to hold off AUSSIE MUSCLE in the run to the finish but broke stride with 50m remaining. MAORI MAYHEM led out then took a trail and appeared to have her chance in third position. Mile Rate: - 2.4.7 Final Half: - 60.32 Margins: - Neck, 30.5m
Trial 3: - CALF PEN was allowed to settle in the early stages and gained a one out and one back trail. He moved up to hit the lead in the home straight and appeared to win with something in reserve. He will be a strong winning chance at Melton tonight based on that performance. MAORI LAW has been trotting extremely well at the trials and finished a game second in fast time. He followed CALF PEN throughout and made a gallant bid for victory in the home straight. He returns from a break at Bendigo tomorrow night and is capable of running a bit of a race based on his trial form. SHEISWATCHING settled last on the markers and moved into the running lane behind MAORI LAW (1-3). She worked quite well for a distant third but it is hard to see her turning the tables on CALF PEN at Melton this evening. MARCYS STAR settled three back on the markers and gained a clear passage at the 300m mark. She held on reasonably well for fourth. SPEED DATING trailed the leader, was held up behind tiring runners and lost 15m before the home turn. She ran into another dead end down the front straight and was unlucky not to finish closer. She is drawn on the pole position at Yarra Valley on Monday and should be able to improve on her numerical form. SECURITY CHECK raced without cover, went looking for the lead at the bell and was all but across to the markers before he spotted the departure gate and ran off the track with 900m remaining. That manoeuvre cost him the lead and he was forced to remain in the death seat for the remainder of the trip. He beat home the early leader JASPERINE, which set up a strong tempo early.
Mile Rate: - 1.57.3 Final Half: - 57.79 Margins: - 1.5m, 27.5m

Mile Rate: - 2.3.9 Final Half: - 59.91 Margins: - Head, 2m
Trial 5: - TRIPLE EIGHT began quickly and was able to head off I CAST NO SHADOW at the start. He set up a slow tempo for the open class pacers and was able to dash home his last 400m in 26.66 seconds to win seemingly with something in reserve. I CAST NO SHADOW held his ground in that fast final section so his effort was also sound.
Mile Rate: - 1.58.2 Final Half: - 55.25 Margin: - 3m
Trial 6: - The French bred trotter HOZARTE VEDAQUAIS hasn’t started since making his Australian debut in a heat of the Victoria Derby in October. He made several errors in that event and was spelled. He returned to the track with a very nice trial victory where he led and was cuddled to the line, recording a small but decisive victory against a strong field. MAJESTICAL BELLE began quickly to race without cover, trailed the leader shortly afterwards and used the sprint lane. She finished a close second with IS THAT A BID being in third after moving up without cover from four back on the markers at the 600m mark. IS THAT A BID returns from a break at Bendigo tomorrow night. HAVE NO FEAR was three back on the markers throughout and beat home NO BIGGIE (5 back markers, 1-1 at 600m, 3 wide from 300m) with MAJESTIC HURRICANE being the last one home after making an error shortly after the start. NO BIGGIE returns from his placed effort in the Super Series back in December at Yarra Valley on Monday afternoon.
Mile Rate: - 1.58.9 Final Half: - 58.84 Margins: - Neck, 2.5m

BETTERTHAN POPSY (Bettathancheddar – Steda Gem) was last for the duration.
Mile Rate: - 2.1.0 Final Half: - 59.59 Margins: - 7m, 4.5m
Trial 8: - MOMENTSLIKETHESE began extremely quickly and was able to lead clearly. She was untroubled in scoring and jogged down to the line to win easily. She has drawn on the outside of the front line first up at Bendigo tomorrow night but she should prove hard to beat. THE WHOLE PACKAGE produced a very nice effort in finishing second. He settled three back on the markers, worked away from the markers on the home turn and made ground in a fast final half. MUSZTANG trailed the leader and finished third with TACT TAMA finishing at the tail. TACT TAMA settled down last, came out three horses wide on the home turn and raced very greenly in the latter stages but he did show some promise.
Mile Rate: - 2.0.9 Final Half: - 56.39 Margins: - 4.5m, 2.5m
Trial 9: - SYMPHONY STRIDE (Well Said – Spicy Stride 1.52.8, $184,635) raced without cover for the majority of the journey and was able to hold her rivals at bay to get the thick end of the prize. ITTAKESLUV (Tintin In America – Hula Gold 1.57.6, $42,612) was last of the four runners early and ran home well along the inside late for a handy second. MAGNETIZE (Art Major – Mezmerizing 1.57.9, $179,221) trailed the leader, angled around runners approaching the home turn and came out wide into the straight. He finished third with the early leader SUNSTAR (Sunshine Beach – Sterita 1.55.9, $145,241) dropping out to the tail after pulling hard mid-race.
Mile Rate: - 2.1.4 Final Half: - 60.07 Margins: - 2m, 2m
Trial 10: - BETTER ECLIPSE trailed the leader, moved to the outside on the home turn and jogged down the straight to win very impressively. He is racing at Mildura this afternoon and will take a lot of beating from that performance. HEAVENLY BRIGADE (Rock N Roll Heaven – Trigirl Brigade) began quickly to find the lead then couldn’t repel the challenge of BETTER ECLIPSE in the run to the finish. POWERLINC was last of the three runners, moved out three horses wide on the first turn and finished at the tail of the field. Both HEAVENLY BRIGADE and POWERLINC are racing at Yarra Valley on Monday.
Mile Rate: - 1.59.5 Final Half: - 59.62 Margins: - 9.5m, 7.5m
BLACKBOOKER: - Better Eclipse
BENDIGO 28/06/21
Trial 1: - WAIKARE COLLEEN trailed the leader and moved away from the inside at the 400m. She finished off too well to get the prize. She is racing at Melton tonight but she is meeting a very strong field. SUPPLANTER settled three back on the inside and used the sprint lane to pick up second position. ILLAWONG BARMAH found the lead but seemed to lose fluency in her trotting gait approaching the home turn and lost her winning chance.
Mile Rate: - 2.5.1 Final Half: - 59.8 Margins: - 4.5m, 20m
Trial 2: - ZAREM trailed the leader ARMCHAIR DRIVE, moved to the outside on the home turn and sprinted very quickly to win impressively by 25m. He looked extremely sharp and is obviously at his peak leading up to his first up performance. ARMCHAIR DRIVE attempted to lead throughout and set up a genuine tempo but got tired late.
