Ten-year-old Agent Maori continues to cast a spell on his younger rivals at Menangle despite embarking on his ninth reason of racing.
A graduate of the inaugural Australasian Premier Trotting Sale in 2013, the gelding chalked up his 22nd success when he overcame interference to win by open lengths at the Sydney headquarters track on Tuesday.
The $5292 winner’s cheque lifted his lifetime tally to $219,373, behind only Big Jack Hammer ($406,372) and Cruisin Around ($292,692) on the APTS money-winning list.
“He’s such a beautiful old horse,” trainer KerryAnn Morris said. “He really enjoys racing. It’s no trouble for him to race on Tuesdays and then back up on the Saturday night.
Agent Maori has had several trainers during his 234-start career.
The gelding was originally prepared in Victoria by Ross Graham before being transferred to NSW horseman Russell Commens at the outset of his three-year-old season.
“We bought him cheaply, won a few races and then sold him,” KerryAnn said. “We bought him back as an eight-year-old and he’s been with us ever since. He’s one of the stable favourites.”
Bred by Pat Driscoll, Agent Maori was got by the Muscles Yankee horse Federal Flex from the Windsong’s Legacy mare Windsong’s Maori, a daughter of the Inter Dominion and Trotting Grand Prix winner Sumthingaboutmaori.
The APTS sale graduates Aldebaran Crescent, who is seventh on the stakemoney list with $184,540, and Hatchback ($123,660), both won on the all-trotters’ night at Melton last Saturday.
