Paul Weidenbach is in hospital and recovering following a serious fall during race two at Yarra Valley on Monday.

The 56-year-old’s wife, Rosemary, has been by the reinsman’s side since the incident and provided thetrots.com.au with an update on his condition.

“I travelled with him from the track to the Royal Melbourne Hospital,” Rosemary said.

“The doctor came in this morning and he thinks the scans were all okay for his neck and his back.

“He (the doctor) still wants to keep him in hospital for another day because he wants to re-test him again in the morning. He has a few bruises around his face and his lips are swollen.

“The main part that they were worried about was his neck, but there is nothing severe or significant in the scan.”

Weidenbach was driving Dashing Cowboy when he was checked and fell during the final lap of the 2150m event. Alex Ashwood (Vincent Grange), David Jack (Asonickiss) and Adam Shaw (Lady Salina) were also involved in the incident, with Ashwood taken to hospital for further observation before being released.

Jack and Shaw were cleared of any injuries before leaving the track.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed lacerations to the offside front leg of Vincent Grange, who has been stood down from racing for seven days and requires a veterinary clearance before resuming. The other horses involved in the fall are being monitored by their respective stables.

Stewards have adjourned an inquiry into the incident that occurred approaching the 600m mark.
