Vale Alistair MacLean

Renowned veterinarian Alistair MacLean passed away late last week aged 78.

Alistair perhaps the most well known and respected veterinary surgeon in Australia spent many years at the Werribee Veterinary Clinic establishing his own practice there and was always available to owners and trainers who had troubled horses whether it be leg, throat or respiratory problems.

He was responsible for getting two of the great standardbreds – Popular Alm and Sokyola back to the race track after performing operations on them.

There were many more in both codes who he assisted in making a successful race track return.

Even though he loved the races, his passion without doubt was harness racing where he raced numerous horses with his family over the years enjoying many successes with various high profile trainer/drivers.

He was a regular at Victorian harness tracks and was most amiable towards anyone who had a query regarding equine problems.

He loved nothing more than spending time around the Romsey stable of trainer Chris Svanosio the partner of daughter Elizabeth.

I was delighted to have known Alistair over the years and spent many conversations with him.

He is survived by wife Susan and daughters Jennifer and Elizabeth (mentioned above).

Harness Racing Victoria offers sincere thoughts and condolences to the MacLean family.

Funeral details are yet to be announced.
