Friends are mourning the passing of long-time harness racing trainer Barry Elmer, a trots participants of more than 40 years.
Barry trained from Tulla Downs in a career that precedes record keeping, but since 1980-81 the trainer's 539 starters produced 18 wins, while he also had more than 100 starts as a reinsman.
Among his successes were five wins with Porte De Choissy and multiple victories with Magnificent Man and Golden Logan.
Barry was lauded at South Melbourne Football Club (pictured), having been a young player in 1969, and the club issued a statement honouring "one of the most tireless and formative contributors to the club throughout its history". Barry is a life member, Hall of Fame member and was assistant secretary and vice-president of the club before becoming the fourth South Melbourne District Football Club president from 1989-1997.
Harness Racing Victoria extends its condolences to Barry's family and friends.
