The harness racing community is saddened to hear of the passing of Gisborne’s Bob Grinter, aged 96.
Bob became hitched on harness racing when involved with Carl O’Dwyer in Kilmore for many years and later went out on his own opening up his own business selling horse shoes to a number of clients and made many overseas trips to inspect and buy what was available. He built a magnificent factory/forge/store room in Woodend which became a very profitable business.
He loved pottering around with a horse or two with his best being a Gyron-Pacing Mary gelding by the name of Gyrons Deed, while The Delegator a trotter by Speedy Chase from Della’s Report was a most honest and consistent performer. Both horses raced during the eighties with Michael Barnard and Ginger Gleeson doing the majority of driving, although Bob also handled the reins on a number of occasions.
During this time he became very friendly with South Australian horseman Brian Mitton with him going over there and Brian doing likewise.
Retiring a number of years back, Brian shifted to Indented Head where he loved his lifestyle fishing and enjoying the seachange.
Harness Racing Victoria sends its sincere condolences and wishes to Grinter’s friends and family.
