Former Boort Harness Racing Club President John Byrne passed away at St John of God Hospital, Bendigo, on July 30 at the age of 88, after a lengthy illness.

John leaves behind his wife Patricia, seven children and 25 grandchildren. He was known to everyone in Boort and nearby Kerang, and was described by former long-serving President John Campbell as “a great bloke who would go out of his way to assist anyone in the area who needed it.”

John was a member of the committee since 1964 and served as Club Secretary between 1978 and 1991. He played many roles during his time with the club, including Saddlecloth/Patrol Steward, Raceday Steward, Club President from 1992 through to 2001, and Club Executive from 1978 to 2009. He was awarded life membership in 1989 and was also named President of the Central Zone of Country Clubs at one stage.

One of his great thrills was being named Volunteer of the Year by HRV in 2008. John was also involved with the Boort Football Club and other local sporting clubs for many years.

Harness Racing Victoria extends sincere sympathy to Patricia, the family and friends.

HRV Chair Bernard Saundry, on behalf of the industry, extends his sincere condolences to Particia and Mr Byrne's family and friends.

His funeral will be held this Friday, August 8, at St Patrick’s Church, Boort, commencing at 11:00am.
