Harness racing followers will be saddened by the passing of John Harland last Thursday at the age of 80.
John learnt his trade off the late Bill McKay who was a doyen at the Melbourne Showgrounds and was a wonderful horseman especially with young horses, while a very young John Douglas (now living in Maryborough) was his “apprentice” with the combination successful many times.
He was also a regular at the Royal Melbourne Show each year, competing in various events. ‘
John for many years was based at the famous “Manfred” stables in Flemington, a stone’s throw from the track entrance where many a champion galloper was trained prior.
He had some very smart horses including two outstanding ones in Chelsea Meadow and On Credit (two Ladyship Cups 1977 from the front and 1978 coming from 25 metres), along with multiple winners Nevikier, Millers Ale, Robert John, Deep Avian and Chelsea Quest just to name a few. All were turned out looking immaculate, as was John in his racing silks of green with a blue V and spotless white driving pants. It was during this time that he was given the nickname “Hollywood”.
During his time, John had two of the sport’s biggest punters as owners. Jack Anderson (Robert John) and Harry Vosalitis (Deep Avian) pulled off a number of successful plunges.
Later after shifting to Kilmore, Echuca and later Strathfieldsaye, John became a renowned horse chiropractor and masseur, being taught previously by a master of the trade in Gerry Perritt and was in keen demand all over Victoria.
Harness Racing Victoria extends sincere sympathy to John's friends and family.
