Vale Leon Conway

Veteran Lancefield owner-trainer Leon Conway passed away aged 84 on Thursday January 23.

Leon born and bred in the Mallee town of Hopetoun was a brother of Maurie and Bill Conway (both well known bookmakers) now deceased who worked for years mainly in the northern part of the state, but did have a stand at both The Showgrounds and Moonee Valley trots. Leon was also an uncle of St Arnaud’s Ross Conway.

Leon loved his harness involvement and raced several horses over the years including what was probably his best, an unhoppled Dawn Ofa New Day-Rumbleon gelding by the name of Forever And A Day who won 15 races with 34 placings from 135 starts. Others to grace the track were Lost Forever, Phillip Street, Forever A Star and maiden Here Comes Lenny which races at Kilmore on Thursday for Rita Burnett and will carry his colours.

I recall Leon and partner Lisia Horton accompanying me on a trip to New Zealand for a ‘Harness Jewels’ Tour a while back – they both had a ball and made many new friends.

Popular in the Lancefield area, Leon will be laid to rest next Monday February 3 in Hopetoun at a service commencing at 11-00am.

Harness Racing Victoria extend thoughts and wishes to Lisia and the Conway family.
