Vale Michael Carey

Wangaratta Harness Racing Club is mourning the loss of Michael ‘Mick’ Carey, a long-time valued member of the trots community.

Mick dedicated much of his life to trotting and predominantly the Wangaratta club, including as track curator at Avian Park Raceway for the past 23 years.

He won the Trots Club Victoria Volunteer of The Year award at the Gordon Rothacker medal night in 2010 and has continued to volunteer countless hours right through until late 2021.

Mick was at the track every day and was always friendly, reliable and very obliging. His son Mark has assisted Mick in the preparation  of the track and facility also in a voluntary capacity.

Mick has been involved in the industry on and off for 60-plus years and held an A grade licence. He trained Tara Leeann, who saluted at Leeton earlier this year, and despite declining health took her to Wagga where she finished fourth earlier this month.

Funeral prayers in celebration of the life of Michael Patrick ‘Mick’ Carey will be held in the Mason Park Chapel, 95 Mason St, Wangaratta on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 commencing at 2pm. Burial will follow the service at the Wangaratta Lawn Cemetery.

Harness Racing Victoria extends its condolences to Michael Carey’s family, including wife Lorraine, and friends.
