Vale Paul Graydon

The harness racing industry lost a true supporter of the sport when Paul Graydon passed away suddenly in Northern Victoria on Sunday, March 15.

Paul had been involved in the sport for many years as a trainer and driver, and held a deep passion for the squaregaiter. As a committee member of the Bendigo Harness Racing Club, he was instrumental in the formation of the Breeders Crown Series, which was held at Bendigo in its early years.

He was also a successful breeder, owner and importer, enjoying plenty of success with horses such as Gluteus Maximus, the first horse trained by Amy Tubbs, along with Gluteus Major, Broadacrossthebeam, Derrie Air, Darcys Fireball, Kyvalley Shaunie and Copacabana. Paul worked alongside several leading trotting trainers, including David Van Ryn, Greg and Jess Sugars, Chris Lang and Amy Tubbs.

In addition to his work with horses, Paul was a starter at many provincial tracks as well as Moonee Valley.

He enjoyed nothing more than racing his stock in partnership, particularly with passionate harness enthusiast Nick Hooper. Alongside long-time friend and associate John Peck, Paul was instrumental in importing the stallions Keystone Salute and R C’s Dee Jay from the USA, with both horses going on to do an exceptional job.

A graveside service to honour and farewell Paul Graydon will be held at 2:00pm on Friday 27th March at Axedale Cemetery.

Harness Racing Victoria chairman Bernard Saundry and members of the board extend their sincere sympathy to Paul’s friends and associates.
