Well known South Australian breeder-owner David Battye and his wife Glenda had a weekend to remember when they landed three winners in two states in the space of 24 hours.

Smart four-year-old Tuppence (pictured) started the ball rolling when he finished powerfully from midfield to prevail in a three-way photo at Menangle in a career-best 1:51.2.

Then, 10 minutes later, Tuppence’s younger half-brother Cobber took full advantage of the passing lane to defeat older rivals at Melton.

Lightly raced two-year-old filly Godsgift completed the treble for the Battye’s when she led throughout at Cranbourne on Sunday night.

Battye, whose family resides at the historic Buckland Park property at Port Gawler, 40 kilometres north of Adelaide, has been involved in harness racing for almost 50 years.

“The best horse we ever bred and raced was Endeared. She was a good and very honest mare.”

Endeared won 31 races and $244,650 in stakes including the Southern Cross Finals at two and three and the NSW Queen Of Hearts.

Among other smart performers raced by Battye have been the Southern Cross winners Treasure and Flagbearer, Enrolled (Vicbred 4YO Trot Final), Logic (SA Breeders Plate), Starrystarryknight, Blurred Lines and The Dapper Don.

“None of them were champions but they all earned around the $100,000 mark,” Battye said.

“The best part of the sport is the people you get involved with. I would like to give a special mention to Michael Norman, our horsebreaker and trainer, Robert A’Court, our pedigree researcher, and Toby Ryan, who handles the breeding and veterinary side.”

Buckland Park Homestead also has horses in training in Victoria with Geoff Webster, Kelvin Barker and Brent Lilley and with Darren Binskin in Sydney.

“We could have up to 10 horses in both the Vicbred and Southern Cross pacing and trotting series later in the year,” Battye said.

The list includes Tuppence, Cobber, Elegant and the trotters Mercenary, Maestro, Sequence and Spotlight.

“Every horse that we’ve bred has been Vicbred.”

The Battyes have scaled back their breeding numbers in recent years.

“We gave away a few mares to Victoria and are currently breeding from only three in Flagbearer, Endeared and Treasure.”
