Victorian Square Trotters Association announces new president

Anne-Maree Conroy has been named the new president of the Victorian Square Trotters Association (VSTA).

VSTA was formed in 1980 to promote the trotting gait in Victoria. The late Hugh Redwood was elected the first president of the VSTA and since then the association has worked closely with Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) to develop the square gaiters in Victoria.

Conroy comes from a family with a life-long involvement in harness racing and was winner of the Pearl Kelly award last year. She has been on the VSTA committee for six years.

Conroy was looking forward to taking up the role of president.

“Having been vice president of VSTA for 18 months, I am excited to now take on the role of president. VSTA has done a great job over the years to promote the trotting gait and working hard to increase members, as well as increase the prize money offered for trotters. I hope to continue doing this,” Conroy said.

“The role of VSTA is more important than ever as our promotion of the square gaiter has grown in significance in recent years. Our committee is passionate about trotting and is always looking for improvements for trotting participants. I truly believe we have a good committee in place at the moment, with a positive vibe going into the future – there are good people doing good things.”

Other positions announced include long time trainer and driver, Tony Xiriha as vice president, who has been on the committee for a year.

Katrina Knight has again been named treasurer, having served in this position for more than 16 years. Katrina is a direct descendant of the Redwood family and great niece of Hugh Redwood.

Ian White has again been named secretary, having previously held the position for 11 years and ending his term several years ago.

VSTA’s flagship event is the Redwood Carnival, held annually in Maryborough. The Redwood Classic was first held in 1986 and is now a Group One classic, while the Redwood Carnival was first staged over three days in 2002 and is now a highlight of the Australian trotting calendar.
