Sugars and Bellman team up to fight prostate cancer

Successful reinsmen Michael Bellman and Greg Sugars will join forces over the month of September as ambassadors for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

The duo will wear special silks emblazoned with the logo of the charity partner throughout the month in a bid to bring awareness to a cancer that more than 25,000 men are diagnosed with each year.

“It is always a good cause and we are always happy to support the charity,” Bellman, 43, said. “I have represented PCFA before with John Caldow and we had a really good year.

“It’s good to bring awareness to prostate cancer.”

The winner of over 1900 races has had a close connection with the cancer that kills around 10 men every day.

“I lost a mate, Fabian Bigmore, who won a Kilmore Cup. He was only 40, so it is not an old man’s disease,” he said.

“If you feel like you have got a problem, you should get checked.”

Sugars, 39, is again proud to be a PCFA ambassador.

“It’s a very worthwhile cause and I am happy to do anything I can to help towards promoting awareness and raising much-needed funds,” Sugars said.

“It’s an absolute honour to be a part of.”

Harness Racing Victoria will donate $200 to PCFA for every winner Bellman and Sugars drive throughout the month of September.

HRV CEO Matt Isaacs said the sport was blessed to have such great ambassadors wear the silks and extended the industry’s support to those battling cancer.

“Harness racing in Victoria has been incredible with the way the entire industry has rallied to take the fight to cancer, whether it being supporting WomenCan through Team Teal, the McGrath Foundation through Pacing for Pink or the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia every September,” Isaacs said.

“These actions are making a difference, not just through raising vital money that helps fund research and provides support to individuals and families affected by cancer, but by raising public awareness for these causes.”
