Trial File: A Blackbook bonanza as first starters prep for debuts

There will be plenty of eyes on first starters who’ve impressed on the trials circuit of late, including three who have earned places in Craig Rail’s Trial File Blackbook.

At Sunday’s Maryborough trials both Beach Heaven (David Murphy) and Acool Investment (Ron Comben) were impressive.

Beach Heaven is an emergency for the three-year-old pace at Horsham on Sunday while Acool Investment will start from gate one at Kilmore on Tuesday, drawn inside another Blackbooker, Nathan Purdon’s unraced Be My Star.

They’re among eight Blackbookers who will step out in the oncoming days.

Scroll down for Craig Rail’s thoughts on this week’s trial hit-outs, including video replays of the standout performers and with the updated Blackbook at the bottom of the page.

SHEPPARTON 17/02/22

Trial 1: – ACE MONTANA began quickly to find the lead, took a trail and used the sprint lane. He dashed home in a sizzling final half of 56.6 seconds and got the prize. He was behind the leader Madam Reactor and in a striking position when trouble occurred at Bendigo on Wednesday night and the race was called off. JUST RALPH began quickly to lead, ran along at a reasonable tempo and was gunned down on the line. HI MANAMEISJEFF NZ settled sixth on the inside, gained a one out and one back trail at the 600m and finished off solidly without being pushed. CASTING SHADOW settled three back on the pegs and finished in fourth position. DAYLIGHT AT DAWN settled in last position, pushed forward to race without cover and finished in fifth. NOMORELYING settled fourth on the pegs, never peeled to the outside at any stage and went to the line hard held. LOUSIANA JO settled fifth on the pegs, lost ground at the 500m and was the last one to cross the line.

Mile Rate: – 2.0.5            Last Half: – 56.6                Margins: – Neck, 8m

NOOSA BOY (Sunshine Beach – Shelroselill) began quickly to find the lead, ran along at a genuine tempo and faded in the straight. He followed with an unplaced effort on debut at Bendigo on Wednesday night. FIRECRACKER NOLA (Captaintreacherous – Habanero 1.59.5, $19,130) settled four back on the pegs, was under pressure at the 600m and was the last one to greet the judge.

Trial 4: – ABBIE settled down four back on the markers and was the first to move to the outside to chase down the tearaway leader HI HO KYVALLEY with 700m remaining. She made a lot of ground, hit the front in the straight and held off the late challenge of HEZ COOLAZ to get the prize. HEZ COOLAZ produced an enormous effort to finish second and if he can mend his manners, will be able to win races. He broke stride at the start, lost approximately 40m, tacked on at the 1200m, moved away from the inside at the 800m and finished well, without being fully extended. HI HO KYVALLEY began quickly to find the front and established a huge lead mid-race. He was still well clear at the quarter pole but got very leg weary late and was run down at the end. SPEEDY LOVER (Love You – Right Interest 1.59.7, $202,096) was five back on the markers for majority of the journey but raced greenly at several parts of the race. Trial 2: – NOSWEETSFORYOU (A Rocknroll Dance – Parfait Bromac) is a Michelle Wright trained juvenile, which is related to three winners including Pow Wow Bromac (1.55.9) and Tall Poppy (1.51.8). The second dam Pascale Bromac (1.57.1, $96,193) was a very good mare and produced a $100,000+ earner in Pepe Bromac (1.54.3) so NOSWEETSFORYOU is nicely bred. She won the trial over the juvenile trotter BLITZTHEMCHUBB (Blitzthemcalder – Pocket Fantasy 2.5.3, $38,135), which is by former Victorian crowd favourite Blitzthemcalder and is out of broodmare gem Pocket Fantasy, which has produced six winners including Edge Hill (1.55.6), Garston Girl (1.57.3), Zephiane (1.57.1), Dublin Chubb (1.59.8) and last season’s star juvenile Plymouth Chubb (1.56.6, $223,930, 15 starts, 14 wins). Mile Rate: – 1.59.1          Last Half: – 60.0                Margins: – 2m, 3m

MARYBOROUGH 20/02/22

Trial 1: – COMMON COURTESY began sharply to find the lead and dashed home in a slick final 800m of 56.5 to comfortably get the prize. She is awkwardly drawn on the inside of the second line at Ballarat tonight but she is performing well enough to be competitive. TELEMACHUS began quickly to trail the leader and held his ground over the latter stages to finish second. He is competing at Ballarat tonight and has the early speed to find a prominent position in the early stages of the event. ACOOL INVESTMENT (Father Patrick – Social Fireball 2.1.4, $63,717) is a nicely bred filly with trainer Ron Comben. She was three back on the markers, used the sprint lane and finished well for a game second. It was a good effort for a 3yo qualifier that was taking on proven winners and she should go well at her debut effort on Tuesday night at Kilmore. JORDANS MATE showed her usual early brilliance to find the lead, backed off the tempo mid-race and kicked on well for third. HESANAVENGER settled four back on the inside, gained a one out and one back trail in the back straight and appeared to have every opportunity but he backed up at Bendigo on Wednesday and led throughout to win comfortably. I KNEW NOT WHERE (Devilish Smile – Biddys Star 1.58.6, $32,588) gave a nice display in third position. She was without cover early before angling onto the markers at the 1400m mark then moved up into the breeze again at the 600m. MIDNIGHT MUSIC (Vincent – Somnio Denario 1.57.3, $53,032) dropped back to be last of the four runners in the early stages and didn’t improve her position at the end.

RASTAMON (Cardigan Boko – Aeonallbright) settled three back on the inside, moved away from the markers at the 400m and was grinding away at the finish to fail by a narrow margin. MONTANA CHEVELLE was without cover early and wasn’t in a great hurry to work across to the markers, edging past WHATS THE TEA to find the front running role at the mile marker. She set up a slow tempo in the lead but broke stride with 700m remaining and lost her chance at the end. WHATS THE TEA will make his debut at Maryborough on Monday.
