Maryborough Harness Racing Club’s iconic Redwood Classic carnival has been given a major shot in the arm thanks to a new five-year sponsorship deal with long-time supporter Aldebaran Park.
Aldebaran Park principal Duncan McPherson broke the news via SEN Track radio on Thursday morning, revealing the new agreement and his desire to see the club find ways to increase interaction with the local community and boost participation in the sport through a range of initiatives.
“It’s exciting times for our sport and I think that if we can get syndication models going and then obviously create opportunities for participation both from an ownership (and) also from an experience point of view, why not?,” McPherson said.
“It’s a great carnival and I think we can add to it and increase its audience base over the next three to five years.
“With the good working party that (MHRC general manager) Les (Chapman) has got, I’m sure that the club will rise to the occasion and fit the mantra, ideologies and synergies that we’ve created together.”
Chapman told SEN Track’s Trots Life that the Aldebaran Park deal was a significant one.
“It is just an amazing contribution that Duncan is prepared to make to our club to further promote the trotter,” he said.
“Duncan has given the club some real impetus about pushing forward, pushing the club forward, taking advantage of initiatives to improve our club, especially, and to promote square trotting overall.
“We’ve got a commitment to our sponsor, that’s for sure. And we’ll be taking all steps to make sure that we give good value for money.”
This year’s Redwood Classic day – the club’s flagship all-trotting meeting – will be held on October 31.
