Vic Derby: Barry Beasley on Archleo

Much more than just a considerable $10,000 stake is on the line in today’s eighth race at Maryborough, when contestants are hoping to stake their claim for a place in the Haras Des Trotteurs Victorian Trotters Derby.

Among that number is Archleo, Barry Beasley’s Wishing Stone trotter whose coming off a second placing in the Aldebaran Park Vicbred Super Series final.

“We were very excited with that, especially when he caused the second false start and we thought we were going to lose everything,” Beasley said. “It was just a great effort I thought.

“I think there’s better things to come from him, he’s only a little fella but he’s all heart. He just keeps on trying.”

Archleo’s listed a hearty $19 chance with TAB.com.au in today’s Brian & Patricia Hughes 3YO Trot at 2.50pm, which can be watched live and free on TrotsVision today.

“We thought we’d use it as a lead-up race to the Derby and hopefully we’ll get a run in the Derby, but it’s a very interesting race (today),” Beasley said.

“He’d want a lot of luck to win the Derby, there are some very very nice three-year-old trotters around at the moment.”

It was a day to remember for Aaron Dunn. Not only did he go back-to-back from last year to this year in the Matthews Petroleum Hamilton Pacing Cup, he also trained the quinella, with Forty Love taking the honours and last year’s winner Dee Roe finishing second, driven by Jackie Barker.

While the ink is far from dry on the $500,000 Summer Of Glory bonus cheque, superstar mare Keayang Zahara is on track to provide her connections with a windfall after her effortless win in the Group 1 $100,000 Aldebaran Park Maori Mile.
