The Vicbred Super Series is always full of beautiful stories, and the Kerryn Manning-trained two-year-old filly Alifetimeforliving represents a cause everyone is cheering for.
Thanks to the contribution from Dr. Kath McIntosh at Llowalong Farms and breeder Greg Fleming of Maurlen Equine, the daughter of Soho Tribeca was sold at the 2023 Nutrien Equine Melbourne sale, where all proceeds were donated to the Pancare Foundation.
The connection with the Pancare Foundation was established by Dr. McIntosh after her father was diagnosed with liver cancer and unfortunately passed in October last year.
“This is a foundation that does research and supports those people and their families that have been diagnosed with upper gastro-intestinal cancers. That includes liver, pancreatic, oesophageal and stomach cancers,” Dr. McIntosh said.
“Most of these cancers fail to be diagnosed early, so for a lot of those people that do get diagnosed with it, there is not a lot of options for them.”
Alifetimeforliving’s new owners – which include top Victorian racecaller Dan Mielicki – passionately took onboard the mission to raise awareness and funds for the Pancare Foundation, with the filly now racing in the Pancare colours and five per cent of her prizemoney also going towards the foundation. The filly known as ‘Alice’ also attends race meetings in a personalised Pancare Foundation rug, sponsored by the Ararat RSL.
“She wears the rug every time she goes to the races to promote it (Pancare Foundation), so people realise she is doing good things for the harness industry, for herself in the way she is travelling at the moment, as well as being a horse ambassador for Pancare,” part-owner Sharon Ralph said.
“She is a beautiful filly – there is no malice and she knows what she’s there for. She’s the perfect horse to be the ambassador for this.
“As an owner, I just hope we can raise some money and she can support that by running some good races.”
After finishing fifth in her heat and third in her semi-final, Alifetimeforliving will be competing in the Group 1 Captain Crunch Vicbred Super Series final for two-year-old fillies at Melton Entertainment Park on Saturday night. She is in race six at 8.10pm and has drawn barrier 11.
“To win Saturday night would be a dream, she’s in for a battle but in this situation the people that we are raising money for are in a much bigger battle,” Ralph said.
