Gait Speed: Brewin ready for “crack” at Vics

Saturday night could be the start of a long and successful relationship between Jayden Brewin and Victorian metropolitan racing, with the 18-year-old reinsman set to make his Tabcorp Park Melton debut.

Having finished fifth in last season’s South Australian driving premiership, which yielded 61 wins in 490 starts, Brewin joined Blake Redden and Michael Howard on RSN 927’s Gait Speed to talk about his plans to take on the state’s trots.

“I’m going to have a decent crack at coming over to Victoria,” Brewin said. “I’ve teed up to go to Greg Sugars this Saturday and flying home the following Sunday, just to get a bit of a feel of what it’s like driving with him.”

Brewin’s well known to Victorian trots fans for his drives to date at Mildura, which saw him finish 10th on the 2017-18 Alabar Concession Drivers’ Premiership, registering 22 wins from his 197 starts.

“It’s been a great season,” he said. “Just learned so much of late and looking forward to the upcoming years.

“Mildura’s been an absolutely great place for me and my father (Justin), whose had some great success up there.”

Brewin will pilot six at Mildura on Friday night, and tipped Gait Speed listeners into one at value, before following up with a drive of Classy Western at Melton on Saturday night in the Beraldo Coffee Pace for trainer Allan McDonough.

“I couldn’t be more thankful,” he said. “When I woke up yesterday morning and saw my name down in the noms I got a bit excited there.

“And probably did stay up a bit last night watching a few replays – only a couple of course. He hasn’t drawn too bad, there’s a little bit of speed there, but he’s a brilliant horse.

“He’s been a great horse to all the owners so hopefully I can just get him around safe and hopefully something good happens.”
