Every Saturday, Ryan Phelan hunts for the most reliable locks to strengthen your multi bets. By analysing race maps, sectional times, and key trainer/driver combinations, he delivers sharp insights to add confidence – and a touch of excitement – to your harness racing, thoroughbred, or sports multis.
Each selection is rated with low, medium, or high confidence and includes a suggested place or win price. The goal? Minimise risk, maximise consistency, and stack the odds in your favour for a strong overall return.
Race 1 – 1720m Renown Silverware Pace
1/1 Le Cardinal – Amy Day/Matthew Craven
Le Cardinal took on the elite two-year-olds last season and has quickly shown he’s come back a furnished three-year-old with two impressive wins this campaign. Both victories came from well back in the field, storming over the top late. He’s risen through the grades quickly, but there’s clearly plenty of upside, and if he can show enough speed to land behind the leader, he’ll be very strong late.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $1.50
Race 2 – 1720m Nutrien Equine Free For All Trot
2/9 Lovemeto – Kerryn Manning/Chris Svanosio
Lovemeto is establishing himself as one of Victoria’s better trotters with the benefit of race fitness and consistent racing this campaign. He finally drew favourably last start, sat parked and proved too strong. The backrow draw over the short trip presents a challenge, but his form is hard to ignore.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $1.80
Race 3 – 1720m Need For Speed Noms Now Open Trot
3/4 Kamaran – Kerryn Manning/Peter Manning
Kamaran has been racing well this preparation and looks well suited back to mobile conditions. He was run down late by a handy one last start after doing work over the final lap. The front-row draw gives him the chance to press forward and be driven aggressively against a field where several runners are struggling to find winning form.
Confidence: Low Rated Win Price: $3.50
Race 4 – 1720m Hygain Edge Pace
4/1 Insider Trading – Ryan Sanderson/Shaun & Jason McNaulty
This looks one of the trickier races on the card with plenty of speed engaged across the front row, particularly among the inside runners who all generally like to roll forward. Insider Trading has been racing consistently this season and gains every opportunity from the pole draw. The map is key and the lowest confidence race of the night.
Confidence: Low Rated Win Price: $3.50
Race 5 – 1720m Logical Staffing Solutions Pace
5/8 Sweet Ideal – Darryl Lawlor/Gary Lawlor
Sweet Ideal has always looked an above-average mare, regularly competing against the stronger fillies and mares of her generation. She appears to have come back improved from a freshen-up, producing a career-best mile rate when winning last start. This is a quality field, but if she can avoid working too hard early, she’s capable of finishing over the top of them late.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $2.00
Race 6 – 1720m Ranvet Pace
6/2 Frugal Fare – Ryan Sanderson/Stephen O’Donoghue
Frugal Fare is yet to win this season, but he’s been racing consistently in stronger company and now finally gets a front-row draw to utilise his gate speed. The short trip suits and he maps to get every chance in a race where several key rivals are also going well.
Confidence: High Rated Place Price: $1.50
Race 7 – 2240m Nevele R Stud Pace
7/2 Fearless Writer – Ellen Tormey/Philip Chircop
The market will no doubt gravitate toward the in-form three-year-olds Seaside Boy and Rocknroll Willow, and rightly so. However, Fearless Writer looks set to secure a very favourable run, likely behind the leader, which is often the ideal position over this trip. She can bounce back strongly from her last-start failure.
Confidence: Medium Rated Place Price: $2.00
