GOODFORM – Craig’s look at Hamilton Monday

Craig Rail has done all of the form for Monday afternoon at Hamilton

Race 1:

OVERVIEW: KEAYANG MINNESOTA (5) commenced from the handicap of 30m, made a mid-race move to find the lead and scored comfortably at Terang seven days ago. This is a field of very similar standard and she is clearly the horse to beat. WHISKEY DAWN (6) broke at start and worked into a distant fourth in the Swan Hill Cup last outing. She hasn’t finished further back than fourth at her past six starts and should run her usual honest race. HAPPY ESCAPE (3) was able to outstay his rivals when resuming at Mount Gambier then followed with a second behind KEAYANG MINNESOTA (5), where he worked to the front then took cover. He has the best handicap out of the major chances and should be prominent throughout. WHY NOW (7) trailed the leader and gained a clear passage at the right time when he accelerated nicely to grab victory on the line at Ballarat last outing. He commences from a tough handicap but is not without a chance.

BACK: KEAYANG MINNESOTA (5) – 3 units (win)

SELECTIONS: KEAYANG MINNESOTA (5), WHISKEY DAWN (6), HAPPY ESCAPE (3), WHY NOW (7)

Race 2:

OVERVIEW: JUST LIKE NUGGET (4) is racing in good form having been placed at his past five attempts. He finished off reasonably well for third behind Krissy in a slick mile rate of 1.57.3 at Charlton last outing and should prove hard to beat under these conditions. VINNY ROCK (7) will appreciate a drop back in class on his latest performances and is versatile enough to overcome the wide draw. He settled midfield and held his own in a sizzling final half of 55.8 seconds when fourth at Ballarat last outing. SMOKIN STREPO (1) was heavily supported and justified the confidence with a big victory in a career best mile rate of 1.57.2 at Terang last week. He is drawn to find the lead again and should take catching. VILLAGE VOICE (6) will find this race to be a little easier than her recent performances so she is a possible improver.

BACK: JUST LIKE NUGGET (4) – 1.5 units (each way)

SELECTIONS: JUST LIKE NUGGET (4), VINNY ROCK (7), SMOKIN STREPO (1), VILLAGE VOICE (6)

Race 3:

OVERVIEW: KEAYANG PASSION (7) will appreciate a huge drop back in class for this assignment. She finished third in the Super Series Final, followed with a second in the Gold Chalice then competed against the star filly Bettor Beach in the Victoria Oaks series. She endured a tough trip and had excuses in the Victoria Oaks Final so she will take beating under these conditions. COLOSIMO (6) is a versatile pacer, which produced a strong finish to score over LOUS MAMBO (2) at Terang last week. He hasn’t finished further back than fourth in twelve starts to date and he should run his usual honest race. STEEL MIKI (5) recorded a slick mile rate of 1.56.0 at Ballarat then finished off well in slick final sectionals at his latest third. He is a smart colt and looms as one of the leading chances. The stable mates LOUS MAMBO (2) and SWIM SUIT (3) both performed strongly at Terang last week and should go well again from their good draw.

SELECTIONS: KEAYANG PASSION (7), COLOSIMO (6), STEEL MIKI (5), LOUS MAMBO (2)

Race 4:

OVERVIEW: PRETTY BASIC (5) is resuming since a Hamilton victory in April. He hasn’t been to the trials but he was competitive against better opposition when he was last in work and he will take beating if he is somewhere near his peak. PRESIDENTIALCHANGE (3) is a fast beginner and led throughout at an Ararat victory on August 23. He is a good chance of getting across to the markers shortly after the start and is worth an investment. EASTBRO MIKA (8) was a big winning chance but galloped when turning for home at her latest unplaced performance at Mount Gambier. She is better than her form reads and is a possible improver under these conditions. MARGARITARI (7) is racing consistently and is not without a chance despite the wide draw. He finished off nicely at his latest second behind Frankie Under Fire at Stawell.

SELECTIONS: PRETTY BASIC (5), PRESIDENTIALCHANGE (3), EASTBRO MIKA (8), MARGARITARI (7)

Race 5:

OVERVIEW: MAJOR ROY (7) trailed the leader and tried hard in the straight when a narrow second behind Billys Tiger Khan at Ballarat. He is a strong pacer and is racing in good form so he is worth an investment. KEAYANG HUSTLER (6) impressed at his first two victories then endured a tough run and peaked over the final stages at his latest sixth. He is a smart colt and is worth another chance. WICKED HANGOVER (1) was resuming since June 2025 when she finished third after gaining a nice trail throughout at Swan Hill. She should have derived plenty of benefit from that performance and her form last preparation was strong so she must be respected. HUXHAM CHUBB (8) produced a terrific performance after parking without cover for the majority of the trip when a big winner at Terang last week. She is awkwardly drawn but is worth thought again.

SELECTIONS: MAJOR ROY (7), KEAYANG HUSTLER (6), WICKED HANGOVER (1), HUXHAM CHUBB (8)

Race 6:

OVERVIEW: STEEL THE MOMENT (4) was resuming since July when he was held up for a run at a vital stage and finished sixth behind the open class pacer Ultimate Vinnie (won again since) then produced a big finish and just failed to gun down El Boston at Maryborough. He appears to be well placed against this field and is capable of returning to winning form. MADRIGAL (9) hasn’t had much luck since returning from New South Wales and is capable of improving on her numerical form. She dragged a flat tyre when fourth at Horsham then followed with an unplaced effort in the Ladyship Cup at Melton. She is a speedy mare and is likely to be finishing strongly. BROWNIESATMIDNIGHT (8) gets into this race with a concession claim and should be getting fitter after having two starts back from a spell so he must be respected. NANCYS BOY (5) ran a good race when resuming since July and is worth thought in multiple combinations.

BACK: STEEL THE MOMENT (4) – 1.5 units (each way)

SELECTIONS: STEEL THE MOMENT (4), MADRIGAL (9), BROWNIESATMIDNIGHT (8), NANCYS BOY (5)

Race 7:

OVERVIEW: DISPERSION (2) was headed off from the pole position and was shuffled back on the markers mid-race at Terang last week. He was last on the home turn and produced a big finish for an eye-catching fourth so he was very unlucky in that performance. He just failed to pick up Lambro Louella in a quick last quarter of 27.9 seconds when second at Horsham prior and he deserves to break through for a win. FLY HIGH MICKEY (1) is a debutante for trainer Matthew Craven, which produced a strong finishing burst to win a trial at Terang last week. He obviously has ability and must be respected. KEAYANG ALABAMA (7) progressed forward to race without cover and battled on well for fourth behind Swim Suit in a mile rate of 1.57.2 at Terang last week. This is a field of similar standard and he is worth an investment. WISHFUL DESIRE (5) has been runner up in two of her four starts to date and is capable of filling again from her reasonable draw.

BACK: DISPERSION (2) – 2 units (win)

SELECTIONS: DISPERSION (2), FLY HIGH MICKEY (1), KEAYANG ALABAMA (7), WISHFUL DESIRE (5)
