All eyes on Ararat as Birchip slot holders prepare to confirm runners

There is a lot more at stake than just the prizemoney for the 11 runners in Friday night’s Ararat Pacing Cup.

With the deadline for slot holders to select their Running of the Bulls representative fast approaching, the Cup is a prime opportunity to seal a berth in the $125,000 feature.

A magnificent initiative by the Birchip Harness Racing Club, the Running of the Bulls is scheduled for March 8.

Conditions for ‘The Bulls’ state a pacer must be four or older with a national rating below 90 (also eligible are horses NR91+ that haven’t won any race of $15,000 or more).

In a well-planned move, Ararat’s committee altered its Cup conditions to mirror Birchip’s major.

Slot holders have until 12noon next Tuesday to confirm their selection.

Harness Racing Victoria froze national ratings for Running of the Bulls horses from 12noon on February 25, meaning all prospects can race penalty-free this weekend to remain eligible for a slot.

HRV’s vision is ideal for Cup contenders Madigan, Pesci, Golden Tribe and Meteor Moth, which would move above 90 if triumphant at Ararat.

The quartet have drawn the back row over 2195 metres, with Meteor Moth the early favourite for trainer Emma Stewart.

A well-bred gelding, Meteor Moth is expected to be close to peak fitness after two starts from a six-month break.

The son of American Ideal was runner-up behind Miracle Mile candidate Hi Manameisjeff in Melton a fortnight ago.

“We are very happy with the way he has come along,” Stewart said. “His runs this time in have been pleasing and his work has improved since.

“The second row around Ararat won’t be easy, but he’s certainly feeling good enough to win and hopefully he can attract attention from a Running of the Bulls slot holder.”
