Bondi Lockdown is already being touted as a Grand Circuit horse of the future and he justified the hype with another brilliant display at Tabcorp Park Melton to win the DNR Logistics 4YO Bonanza.
Aaron Dunn’s superstar entire got things his own way and didn’t let favourite punters down with an all-the-way success in the Group 1 sprint on Saturday night.
Bondi Lockdown quickly found the front from barrier six and that’s where he stayed, carving out quarters of 27.8sec, 30.1sec, 27.6sec and 27.0sec for a mile rate of 1:51.6min.
On the line, Bondi Lockdown had 2.4m to spare over Beyond Delight (Emma Stewart/Greg Sugars), with Kimble (Matthew Craven) third. Michael Stanley’s Rock N Roll Doo was well fancied in the market and ran an enormous race for fourth after galloping at the start then drifting back to the tail of the field.
“Once Mattie (Craven with Kimble) came off my back, he just knuckled down and he was home. I gave my first wave in a Group 1 win tonight,” Dunn, who also owns the son of Somebeachsomewhere, said.
“I’ve never had a Grand Circuit horse. I had a horse Dee Dees Dream, who was a good little horse but just was that second tier.
“Hopefully he’s going to the top.”
Bondi Lockdown is now a three-time Group 1 winner after claiming both the VHRC Caduceus 3YO Classic and Vicbred Super Series 3YO Colts and Geldings Final, and now has earnings up close to $300,000.
The victory earns the horse a spot in the $250,000 Chariots Of Fire to be run at Tabcorp Park Menangle on February 19.
