Brown holds all the aces with a great gate in a field full of stars

Promising young New South Wales-driver Jack Brown might hold all the aces in a star-studded Hyland Harness Colours Group 3 Smoken Up Sprint on Saturday night.

In a field comprising of Group 1 stars Catch A Wave, Leap To Fame and Captain Ravishing, former Victorian-trained pacer Curly James could be the one to watch.

The six-year-old now in the care of Jason Grimson has had seven runs with two wins and two placing for the new camp.

Brown, 20, has been tasked with transporting the winner of over $250,000 down the highway.

“I’m on the way and I’m in the car,” Brown said. “I’m bringing him down and will be in Victoria at about 8pm (Oct 4).

Saturday night’s $50,000 event will be the reinsman’s second foray in Victoria after partnering with another of the Grimson stable’s runner, Cya Art in the 2023 Cranbourne Cup.

Brown and Curly James have drawn barrier one for Saturday night’s Group 3 event, giving the young driver a crucial advantage.

“I think I do (hold all the cards),” he said.

“I’ll be trying to pump him (out of the gate) pretty hard to try and hold them out without doing nothing too silly, the main aim is to sit on Leap To Fame, but everyone else would have the same idea.

“Leap To Fame is going to have to come out hard enough, he wouldn’t want to take too much time to get to the front, because they will be going quick.”

Master trainer Jason Grimson hasn’t given the 20-year-old too much advice ahead of the 1720m trip.

“Jason (Grimson) told me to ‘have fun’”, Brown said.

Curly James could feature in next week’s $300,000 Sportbet Victoria Cup, with Brown hoping he keeps the steer.

“I’d like to hope so, we might have a few in it so hopefully I can keep the drive on him.”

The $50,000 Hyland Harness Colours Smoken Up Sprint is set to go at 6.35pm.
