A fourth two-year-old Group 1 is at the mercy of harness racing’s wonder kid Plymouth Chubb, who stretched his winning streak to 13 with a dominant performance during Monday’s Vicbred Super Series heats at Maryborough.
The Peter Manning-trained gelding led and easily held off all rivals to prevail in the first of three VSS 2YO Colts and Geldings qualifiers.
He’s likely to start a short-priced favourite in the $100,000 elite level final at Tabcorp Park Melton on New Year’s Eve, which will bring the curtain down on a remarkable juvenile season.
After being beaten on debut, Plymouth Chubb has gone on to win his next 13 starts including the Home Grown Classic, Redwood Classic and Breeders Crown at Group 1 level.
It was an afternoon for favourite punters on Monday as six of the 10 Vicbred Super Series heats for two-year-old and three-year-old squaregaiters were won by those at the top of the market.
Bee Bee Beroc (Alison Alford/Chris Alford) and Beratini (Gary and Debbie Quinlan/Chris Alford) won the other 2YO Trotting Colts and Geldings qualifiers, while Just A Bit Touchy (Emma Stewart/Kerryn Manning) and Aldebaran Vera (Margaret Lee/Jason Lee) claimed the 2YO Trotting Fillies events.
Parisian Artiste (Alex Ashwood/Tayla French), Aldebaran Zeus (Brent Lilley/Chris Alford) and Utopia (Emma Stewart/Greg Sugars) prevailed in the 3YO Trotting Colts and Geldings division races as Senitas Strength (Mick Blackmore/James Herbertson) and Keayang Xena (Paddy Lee/Glen Craven) took out the 3YO Trotting Fillies heats.
Qualifiers from each division now prepare for Group 1 finals on December 31, with the four-year-old trotting heats penciled in for tomorrow night’s Tabcorp Park meeting.
Wednesday night will then see two-year-old, three-year-old and four-year-old pacers contest Vicbred Super Series semi-finals at Melton.
