Ewen to lay in wait at Mildura and ‘Proof Boy’s got what it takes

If there are shots fired early in Saturday night’s Tasco Petroleum Mildura Pacing Cup, Scott Ewen is confident his Bulletproof Boy will be primed to make a late bid for the coveted crown.

The trainer/driver said his seven-year-old, who’s placed in five of his last six starts, “definitely … can win” during a TrotsVision cross to last night’s Industry Party at The Setts Mildura.

“We just need some action and we need the old True Mildura Style happening in the race, he’s definitely a big chance if that can happen,” Ewen said.

The 30-time winner’s been racing well without success since the February 5 Mercury 80 final, the 1200-metre dash a far cry from Saturday night’s frenetic 2600-metre Group 2 long distance haul.

Starting from outside the back row, Ewen will again lay in wait on Bulletproof Boy, hopeful the front line will make it difficult for the likes of Our Millionaire, Boots Eletric or Phoenix Prince to take command of the race.

“I think the three, Mailman, is going to be the early leader,” he told TrotsVision. “Of course (Boots Electric) gets the run through behind him, so he is out of the better horses going to be the first one there probably.

“Hopefully the lower grade horses are going to make him work hard to get there. If that happens and the better horses have got to get around them and take off, it keeps the mid-race pressure as well then all of a sudden we might be a chance to be dragged into it.”

And if he gets a window, the crowd favourite Bulletproof Boy is conditioned to strike.

“He’s in career best form,” he said. “Everyone thinks he’s an old horse but I think he’s young at heart. He’s a short distance horse, but with the right run I think he can run the journey and be a chance.”
