Fantastic four: Jason Lee a dominant force

The Rock Star was in tune on Saturday night when reinsman Jason Lee produced four winners, just the second time he’s achieved such a feat at Tabcorp Park Melton.

Saluting twice for Yabby Dam Farms’ trainer Anton Golino and trainer/mum Marg Lee, it was a night to remember for Lee and Terang, with fellow townsman Matt Craven also amassing a winning double.

“I’ve been pretty lucky,” Lee told TrotsVision, having driven four winners “a couple of times and Terang and Ballarat and other night down here”.

The good times kicked off with Parisian Opera winning the first Aldebaran Park Vicbred Platinum Metropolitan Trot heat for Anton Golino’s Yabby Dam Racing.

“I rated her as one of the favourites to be honest,” Lee said of the four-year-old mare, who paid $7.10 on TAB.com.au’s tote. “She’s got really good gate speed, she obviously had to get across Johnny (Caldow and Claudys Prince) early but even then (I thought) the front may have been there. I thought she was a good chance and it showed.”

Next stop was the Country Clubs Championship Final and, after getting surprisingly mowed down by Sofala in the heat, Lee and Jilliby Chevy made amends for Marg Lee to win the $30,000 Group 3, the biggest pay day of the Roll With Joe five-year-old’s career. Lee said there was significant improvement left in Jilliby Chevy.

“He’s just not probably firing 100 per cent, the other day we had a few issues with his feet cross-firing just before the race,” he said. “Tried to get him right, some people will probably go he ran a 54 half, he’s gone pretty good – that was what mum was telling me – but you can just tell when he’s probably not quite right. Again tonight he probably just let them get closer than he should if he’s 100 per cent.”

There was more relief after Jilliby Bandit claimed the TAB Multiplier Pace, another win for trainer Marg Lee.

“I probably didn’t rate him as good last week, so I’m glad I could make amends tonight. He’s just a funny horse, he’s a good leader, he’s good with a sit, he’s been a lovely horse right through, but he tends to get to far in front too early and he’ll switch off and it’s pretty difficult for him to get back going.”

Lee then capped his night with the aptly named All Cashed Up who took the Garrards @ Melton 3YO Trot for Golino despite breaking twice in the running.

“(After he broke the second time) it was get him back down and follow them around and to be honest he felt so good a long way out, but you don’t do that very often at all.”

Victorian hobby trainer Peter Wallis has broken a 28-year drought from the winner’s circle, preparing five-year-old gelding Orch (Lincoln Royal) to a victory at the Melton harness racing meeting on Friday night (Sept 26).

Three-year-old gelding Golden Tribe took on the older horses in the Sharps Bakery Pace on Saturday night. He had to overcome the tricky barrier of 12. He was last with a lap to run but looped the field very impressively to win.
