Gath pins his SA Cup hopes on this afternoon’s barrier draw

Master trainer Andy Gath will prepare two chances for this Saturday night’s 2024 South Australian Pacing Cup with Hector and Yambukian.

Yambukian made his way through to the Group 3 event by winning the Gawler Cup on September 27, while Hector triumphed in the first heat at Globe Derby on Saturday night.

Gath, 56, will be pinning his chances on this afternoon’s barrier draw.

“I obviously got two chances (Hector and Yambukian), it’s all barrier depended, it will make a difference to both of their chances,” Gath said.

“Hector is a horse that likes to sit on pace and driven for a bit of luck where Yambukian is the complete opposite, he’s the type of horse that will bully his way around.

“Two completely different styles of horses, but they both won their way into the race and they’re in really good order.”

The multiple Group 1 winning trainer received Hector from talented New South Wales- trainer, Jason Grimson.

“He’s (Hector) not a very good track worker, they gave me the heads up about that,” he said.

“He is very unimpressive at home and his first run in the Kilmore Cup he didn’t go too bad for me.

“He was a lot sharper at Globe Derby last week, he hasn’t been here long, but we are still learning about him.”

The Long Forest horseman made the decision to leave Hector in capable hands for the trip to South Australia.

“I didn’t go this time, my father-in-law went,” Gath said.

“We generally leave the morning of the race about 6:00AM and arrive in the afternoon and they come back the next day.”

The barrier draw for the 2024 South Australian Pacing Cup is set to be announced later this afternoon.
