On the morning of the world’s greatest harness race, the Elitloppet, there was uncertainty whether Just Believe would leave a lasting mark on the international stage — the champion he was destined to become.
Yet one thing was beyond doubt: Greg Sugars had already proven himself the perfect ambassador for Australian harness racing, embodying everything we could hope to show the world.
In the months leading up to May 28, 2023, Greg and his wife Jess charted a familiar yet daunting path from their beautiful Larajay Farm in Myrniong, Victoria, to the pinnacle of trotting at Solvalla, Sweden. Alongside them was their star square-gaiter, affectionately known to all as "Harry."
The task ahead was formidable — a 60-hour journey spanning Bangkok, Doha, Amsterdam, Germany, Denmark, and Malmö before finally arriving in Upplands Väsby, Sweden. Throughout it all, Greg never left Harry’s side, their bond reminiscent of Tommy Woodcock and Phar Lap.
The journey was a cocktail of anticipation, excitement, and uncertainty — a young couple chasing their dream on the sport’s most hallowed ground. They weren't the first Australians to take on this challenge, following the paths of Chris Lang and Tim Butt, but what had changed was the world watching in real time. Thanks to technology and their generosity of spirit, Greg and Jess let us come along for every moment.
They could have easily closed the shutters, focusing only on the enormity of their task. But Greg and Jess understood it was bigger than just their story. They knew what it meant to their peers, to racing enthusiasts, and to anyone who believes in the magic of an underdog.
Both came from proud harness racing dynasties, raised with a deep respect not just for their family legacies, but for the sport itself — and they carried a mission to help it flourish once more. This was their moment to be the flagbearers for Australia, for harness racing, and for everyone who loved it.
To share their space and witness their journey firsthand was a profound privilege. We saw up close Greg’s incredible poise, horsemanship, and grace — qualities that earned him more than 4000 wins, 70 Group 1 victories, and over $40 million in prizemoney.
Greg’s first instinct was always to smile; his second was to say "yes," as a selfless ambassador for our sport. He represented us with humility, dignity, and unbreakable spirit.
On May 28, 2023, Solvalla exploded with colour, noise, and energy. Greg and Jess, bursting through the clouds of pink smoke like true rockstars, were met by a sea of cheers. Every Australian watching swelled with pride. Through Greg, Jess, and Harry, we all felt we were there. The Europeans embraced the story too — the little horse from Australia and the big-hearted team behind him.
Greg, ever humble, could barely believe he belonged among legends like Björn Goop. Fans called their names, waved flags, tossed merchandise their way, and somewhere in that Swedish crowd, the unmistakable chant of "Aussie Aussie Aussie!" rang out.
History shows that Elitloppet Day ended in heartbreak. Interference in the heat cruelly dashed Just Believe’s hopes. In such a moment, no one would have begrudged Greg for retreating into silence. Yet true to his character, Greg pulled himself together, found the right words, and completed the story, offering closure and gratitude to the countless people who had travelled the journey with him.
It was in that moment of heartbreak, I believe, that Greg, Jess, and Harry became even greater champions. We all felt like proud parents, wanting to embrace them and tell them how much they had lifted us — how they made us stand taller, prouder to be part of the Australian harness racing family.
Of course, the story didn’t end there. What followed was the remarkable rise of Just Believe into the pantheon of greats, racking up Group 1 victories and flying so often he surely earned diamond status. Their journey brought people together in ways only sport — and heart — can.
Greg Sugars was always a great driver. Always a champion. One of the finest ambassadors our sport has ever known.
Thank you, Greg. For the memories. For the pride. For believing — and for making us believe too.
