All the coverage from a huge night of racing at Tabcorp Park Melton, featuring 12 semi-finals of the Vicbred Super Series for two, three and four-year-old pacers.

Barrier draws for Group 1 finals were completed through the evening and have been included below.

ALWAYS B MIKI VICBRED SUPER SERIES 2YO FILLIES

Amore Vita is one of the latest weapons to emerge from Nathan Purdon’s burgeoning Lara barn and she showed her class with a brilliant Always B Miki Vicbred Super Series 2YO Fillies semi-final win at Tabcorp Park Melton on Wednesday night.

The former Kiwi pacer racked up a fourth Australian victory thanks to a blistering turn of foot from back in the field that saw her rocket past early leader Petillante (Emma Stewart/Jason Lee) and clear out to win by just over 6m on the line.

Stewart-trained Our Little Jet (David Moran) had the soft run three back the pegs and finished well for second ahead of Mykorona, who ran a beauty for Horsham horseman Aaron Dunn at long odds.

The final quarter was clocked in 26.7sec for a mile rate of 1:56.2min over the 2240m trip.

Champion reinsman Chris Alford was impressed with Amore Vita’s display ahead of the $130,000 Group 1 final on New Year’s Eve.

“That was a terrific run - couldn’t be happier leading into the final,” Alford said.

“Nathan said she had come on well since her heat and he was spot.”

The Stewart camp had Encipher (Kate Gath) as a short-priced favourite in the second of the two-year-old fillies’ semis, but it was stablemate Fiamma that stole the show.

Jodi Quinlan found cover in the one-out one-back spot from barrier seven and then pounced at the top of the straight, running past Encipher who had done it tough outside the leader for much of the trip.

“I wouldn’t swap my drive for any of them," Quinlan said.

“If she draws good, she's got the speed to make her own luck early and if she happens to draw awkward, she can sit, camp off the speed and still get home as she showed tonight.

“She's a great live chance.”

ART MAJOR VICBRED SUPER SERIES 2YO COLTS & GELDINGS

Snake Valley trainer Damien Burns has a live hope in the Art Major Vicbred Super Series 2YO Colts and Geldings Final after Solesseo Matuca produced a tough performance to win his semi-final on Wednesday night.

Master reinsman Anthony Butt lobbed in the death seat through the early stages of the race and then took up the lead when Emma Stewart-trained Khafaji (Chris Alford) moved around from the back. And that’s where he stayed for the remainder of the contest, slipping clear in the home straight to beat Hes Charlies Angel (Charlene Gusman/David Miles) and Heza Son Of Agun (Matthew Craven/Sofia Arvidsson), who galloped at the turn but got back down to flash home for third.

"He's always been a nice horse," Butt said.

"He went through a stage where he was hanging really bad, doing things wrong and Damien has done a great job, changed his gear a bit and he's really come good the last six weeks.

"He's always shown a lot of ability and he's just getting better and better.”

Kialla trainer Isabel Walsh then produced a massive boilover with Repelling, who won the other semi at $101 on the TAB fixed odds.

Leigh Sutton drove a patient race from barrier one after taking cover behind leader Sweetpassion (Matthew Craven/Glen Craven), who never got much peace in front. When the run came, Repelling peeled off his rival’s back and sprinted best to score by a head over Captain Rival (Emma Stewart/David Moran), who charged home from the back of the field for second. Sweetpassion battled away gallantly for third.

“He’s improved every time he has gone around this little horse,” Sutton said.

THE STORM INSIDE VICBRED SUPER SERIES 3YO FILLIES

An outside back row draw and sizzling last half still wasn’t enough to stop superstar Ladies In Red from winning her three-year-old fillies’ semi-final in jaw-dropping fashion.

Driver David Moran sent the Emma Stewart-trained multiple Group 1-winning filly to the spot outside the leader shortly after the start, and despite a tough trip parked to Joanna (Jackie Barker) and rapid closing quarters of 27.3sec and 27.0sec, she wore down her stablemate in the closing stages to prevail by a head on the line.

“She just takes that next level when she needs to - she's one in a million really,” Moran said.

“She had a pretty easy run last week, so she probably did need a bit of a blowout tonight. It probably wasn't the ideal blowout, but she'll top up pretty good from that and she'll be mighty hard to beat next week.”

Runaway Celebrity (Kate Gath) completed a Stewart-trained trifecta by running third before the stable produced the first four fillies over the line in the other semi.

Jason Lee got Rogue Wave through from the second row to find the early lead and it proved the winning move as she dictated out in front then held off favourite Beach Music (David Moran) by a half-neck at the post.

Treachery (Kerryn Manning) and Dangerous Hand (Chris Alford) got home for third and fourth respectively, but were beaten well over 10m.

While Ladies In Red clocked a 1:55.4min mile rate, Rogue Wave went a shade quicker in 1:55.2min.

ROCK N ROLL HEAVEN VICBRED SUPER SERIES 3YO COLTS & GELDINGS

Horsham horseman Aaron Dunn is eyeing a second Group 1 success with his star Bondi Lockdown after the colt produced a monstrous display to win his semi-final.

Dunn sent the VHRC Caduceus Classic winner from January around the field down the back straight, and despite appearing to be beaten off by favourite and leader Beyond Delight (Emma Stewart/Greg Sugars), came again in the home straight and pulled away to score by nearly 4m.

The field rated a sizzling 1:53.5min for the 2240m trip, with Beyond Delight second and Captain Bellasario (Jayne Davies/Jack Laugher) third.

“He broke the track record at home by two seconds the other day and pulled up with a heart rate of 77 so that sort of gave me confidence that he was on song,” Dunn said after the race.

Bondi Lockdown, who has now won 11 of 25 career starts, was one of eight runners from the Dunn stable to compete at Melton on Wednesday night.

Rebecca Bartley teamed up with Emma Stewart’s Tasmanian import Longfellow to win the other of the semi-final battles.

From barrier two, Bartley worked to the front in the early stages of the race and got away with a controlled 30.8sec third quarter before dashing home in 26.7sec.

Kimble (Matthew Craven/Sofia Arvidsson) was a neck away in second, with Better Eclipse (Jess Tubbs/Greg Sugars) in third.

VINCENT VICBRED SUPER SERIES 4YO MARES

Maajida’s tilt at the Vicbred Super Series triple crown remains on track after she powered through Wednesday night’s semi-final.

The daughter of Somebeachsomewhere brought up a staggering sixth success on the Melton card for trainer Emma Stewart when she pinged away from the mobile and led all the way to score in a mile rate of 1:55.8min.

She beat Common Courtesy (Wayne Ronan/Connor Ronan) and Belladonna Girl (Greg Norman/Kerryn Manning) by 3.5m and 10.1m respectively.

“She's usually a relatively relaxed sort of horse, but with the minor gear change of a little set of blinkers on tonight, she was very, very sharp indeed,” driver Greg Sugars said.

“Great to see her back at her best.”

Maajida is already a VSS Group 1 winner at two and three and will chase success for a third successive season on New Year’s Eve.

However, she will face stiff opposition from Spellbound after Nathan Purdon’s mare won the other semi-final on Wednesday night.

With Stuart McDonald at the controls, the daughter of Art Major led easily from the inside barrier and rated 1:59.5min in her all-the-way triumph.

Jilliby Zagami (Paddy Lee/Glen Craven) sat parked and boxed on well for second, while Heavenly Charm (Anthony O’Connor) placed third at big odds.

Maajida has drawn the inside of the back row for the December 31 showdown, while Spellbound has come up with the outside of the front line.

ULTIMATE SNIPER VICBRED SUPER SERIES 4YO ENTIRES & GELDINGS

Top reinsman Greg Sugars could barely have been more complimentary of New South Wales raider Jay Ok after his enormous four-year-old entires and geldings’ semi-final performance.

The Paul Fitzpatrick-trained son of A Rocknroll Dance was wide and off the track from his barrier seven draw for much of the first lap and then sat parked to Jilliby Sylvester (Margaret Lee/Glen Craven) at the bell. And despite the tough run, Sugars barely had to get busy with the reins as the horse outgunned his main rival to win by close to 2m.

Adding to the enormity of the effort was the fact the field zipped home in a 26.6sec last quarter to clock a mile rate of 1:55.5min for the middle-distance trip.

“He is a proper horse,” Sugars said post-race.

“I made that comment to Glen Craven as we pulled up. I looked across and they were pretty much the first words out of my mouth: ‘this is a serious horse’.

“I'm very excited to be behind him.”

Jay Ok has drawn barrier 12 for the Group 1 final on New Year’s Eve, while fellow semi-final winner Honolua Bay has come up with gate five.

David Moran was at the controls for Honolua Bay’s dominant 5.9m triumph, which was his fourth-straight victory since joining Emma Stewart’s barn.

The Somebeachsomewhere gelding took a while to work to the front, but eventually did so and then rattled home in 26.4sec for a mile rate of 1:57.2min.

Honolua Bay found the lead and held off Jay Ok by 2.9m when the two clashed in the VSS heats at Ballarat on December 16 and next week’s rematch is poised to be a cracker.
