ID18 special: Brian and his pony reach pinnacle

The unforgettable pinnacle of winning an Inter Dominion continues to gift trainer-driver Brian Gath a warm glow some 40 years on.

Gath’s horse Markovina triumphed in the 1978 Inter Dominion, the first at Moonee Valley Racecourse, and has shared his recollections in the second episode of the Legends of the Inter Dominion, which counts down to December’s ID18 at Tabcorp Park Melton.

“I think Inter Dominion is like the special race in Australasia … the pinnacle,” Gath said.

“My father tried for many years to win it, ran a place or two, and my uncles, and I always thought it would be wonderful to have a runner, never mind win it. It was always something that you worked towards, if you found one good enough, and he was – Markovina.

“He was a beautiful horse, lovely little pony. I was so relieved and to think that he won it was the most wonderful thing. I’ve still got very fond memories of him. I think about that horse pretty often.”
