Every Saturday, Ryan Phelan hunts for the most reliable locks to strengthen your multi bets. By analysing race maps, sectional times, and key trainer/driver combinations, he delivers sharp insights to add confidence – and a touch of excitement – to your harness racing, thoroughbred, or sports multis.
Each selection is rated with low, medium, or high confidence and includes a suggested place or win price. The goal? Minimise risk, maximise consistency, and stack the odds in your favour for a strong overall return.
Race 1 – 1720m Hygain Edge Pace
1/9 Big Bad Ossie – Ryan Sanderson/Stephen O’Donoghue
Big Bad Ossie has been quite good in his two runs back from a break from tricky draws. He gets a soft trailing draw to map reasonably well, and whilst his record here is fair, this is the most suitable field he’s faced.
Confidence: Low Rated Win Price: $2.50
Race 2 – 1720m Lamaros Hotel Pace
2/8 Intrusion – Abbey Turnbull/Craig Turnbull
Intrusion has been terrific since joining the Turnbull barn, and whilst his wins have been at the provincials, he looks city class. He has a powerful sprint at the end of his races, so with the right tempo he can flash late.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $2.40
Race 3 – 2240m Hip Pocket Castlemaine Pace
3/8 Son Of Mac – Kyle Marshall/Kyle Marshall
Son Of Mac needs to be taken on trust here, as his two runs back from a break have been below par. This is a significant drop in grade, however, and his best form from last season would have him right in it from the soft draw.
Confidence: Low Rated Place Price: $1.80
Race 4 – 2240m Aldebaran Park Vicbred Voucher Trot
4/3 Aldebaran Brooke – Chris Alford/Alison Alford
Aldebaran Brooke finds a suitable race here on the back of a solid effort last week when a close-up 4th. She races well when she can find the top, which she’s a chance of doing here.
Confidence: Medium Rated Place Price: $1.40
Race 5 – 2240m Nutrien Equine Pace
5/7 Timbimboo – Luke Dunne/Andy Gath
Timbimboo has been good since coming from NZ with his best performance coming off the front row where he’s able to map favourably. This looks to be a suitable assignment with the junior claim.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $2.00
Race 6 – 2240m IRT Ian Daff Memorial Pace
6/7 Uniquely Ideal – Mark Pitt/Emma Stewart
Uniquely Ideal galloped as favourite last start at Birchip and may not have handled the tighter circuit. She was a winner prior when controlling the tempo in a sprint home. She looks well suited to mares grade.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $1.50
Race 7 – 1720m Logical Staffing Solutions Pace
7/6 New Shuffle – Chris Alford/Philip Chircop
New Shuffle is a horse who’s always shown ability and has often raced against the best in his age group. His last two have been in much tougher grade than this and provided he’s travelled well back from NSW he’s the one to beat.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $1.20
