Every Saturday, Ryan Phelan hunts for the most reliable locks to strengthen your multi bets. By analysing race maps, sectional times, and key trainer/driver combinations, he delivers sharp insights to add confidence – and a touch of excitement – to your harness racing, thoroughbred, or sports multis.
Each selection is rated with low, medium, or high confidence and includes a suggested place or win price. The goal? Minimise risk, maximise consistency, and stack the odds in your favour for a strong overall return.
Race 1 – 2240m Benstud Standardbreds Pace
1/3 Big Sledge Hammer – Chris Alford/Ricky Debono
Big Sledge Hammer has run some brave races here at Melton recently and he’s particularly advantaged when he can race on speed. With a good front row draw, he can be well positioned to be strong in the finish at decent value.
Confidence: Low Rated Place Price: $2.50
Race 2 – 1720m Pryde’s Easifeed Pace
2/9 Montana Pride – James Herbertson/Ashleigh Herbertson
Montana Pride gets the draw he likes, punching through off a speedy front row draw here, and he’s never far away under these sorts of conditions. If the tempo eventuates as expected it should be made for those running on late.
Confidence: Low Rated Place Price: $1.70
Race 3 – 2240m Hip Pocket Castlemaine NMW Pace
3/11 The Steel Dragon – James Herbertson/Ashleigh Herbertson
The Steel Dragon was a complete forgive last time here, forced to go back from the draw without significant tempo to work into the race. This race sets up a bit better for him to unleash his strong finishing burst.
Confidence: High Rated Place Price: $1.50
Race 4 – 2240m IRT Trot
4/7 Charleston Avenue – Taylor Youl/Chris Svanosio
Charleston Avenue is a tough customer who runs his best races when up on speed, able to bowl along within himself. He can press forward from this draw and get ahead of his back row dangers to be hard to run down.
Confidence: Low Rated Place Price: $1.40
Race 5 – 2240m Aldebaran Park Trot
5/9 Quirky Character – James Herbertson/Ross Graham
Quirky Character has been a fine example of the horsemanship of trainer Ross Graham and James Herbertson to turn this horse from a handful to a reliable high-quality trotter. He gives away map advantage again here, but his form is hard to ignore.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $2.40
Race 6 – 1720m Swift Signs Pace
6/7 Bulletproof Boy – James Herbertson/Scott Ewen
Bulletproof Boy is the pride of Victoria, and you can make a case he was unlucky not to feature in last week’s elite Miracle Mile. He was checked at the start and lost valuable ground, only to run the best sectionals in the race. Wide draws in this grade are normally hard to overcome, but he’s a special horse.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $1.70
Race 7 – 1720m Vicbred Voucher Pace
7/1 Always Be Blakey – James Herbertson/Kelly Stuart-Mitchell
Always Be Blakey has been terrific in his two runs back from a break this time in, and although up in class, the race sets up well. He can hold leaders back here, likely Followtheace, and take his shot at the sprint lane.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $2.40
Race 8 – 1720m Hyland Racing Colours Pace
8/6 Captain Perfect – Mark Pitt/Emma Stewart
Captain Perfect is resuming here from an outstanding 3yo campaign where he stamped himself as one of the country’s best in his age group. He’s had one trial into this and has the map advantage on his key rivals here to be hard to run down.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $1.60
Race 9 – 2240m Hertz Melton Trot
9/4 I Am Wilma – Chris Alford/Chris Lang & Sonia Mahar
I Am Wilma was beaten fair and square her last couple, but you must be forgiving of such a high-quality mare on her way back to genuine fitness. She will be crossed at the start by Rockinwithattitude, but if the retake is there, or she can control from the chair, it will be a great battle.
Confidence: Low Rated Win Price: $2.50
Race 10 – 1720m Melton City Council Pace
10/6 Baystyle – Geoff Webster/Geoff Webster
Early season 2yos with limited exposed form can be tricky to navigate. Baystyle comes from an astute stable with young horses and his 2nd recently at Maryborough was behind a smart horse, so can go one better with the draw advantage.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $2.50
