Every Saturday, Ryan Phelan hunts for the most reliable locks to strengthen your multi bets. By analysing race maps, sectional times, and key trainer/driver combinations, he delivers sharp insights to add confidence – and a touch of excitement – to your harness racing, thoroughbred, or sports multis.
Each selection is rated with low, medium, or high confidence and includes a suggested place or win price. The goal? Minimise risk, maximise consistency, and stack the odds in your favour for a strong overall return.
Race 1 – 2190m Zilzie Wines Up to 49 Pace Final
1/2 G B Brave – Luke Sutherland/Kate Attard
With the two heat winners drawn side-by-side and both looking for the front, the race could be won in the first 400m, depending on how much G B Brave and Nevs Dream test each other. The barrier advantage gives G B Brave the nod.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $2.50
Race 2 – 1790m Club Merbein 49-53 Pace Final
2/11 The Art Of Success – Mark Pitt/Emma Stewart
The Art Of Success overcame a bad draw to sit tough and run away from the opposition in good time in her heat. The likely front runners Royal Saxon couldn’t match her, and Ronzel Mickey doesn’t look to have the same speed profile.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $1.20
Race 3 – 2190m Jade Benham Local Member VICBRED Voucher Maiden Pace
3/1 Fully Reckless – Ryan Sanderson/Shane Sanderson
Fully Reckless is a first starter 2yo giving away experience to older opposition; however, what he’s produced in two trials looks to have these covered, provided he can handle the tighter track from an inside draw. The value danger is Mels Night Out on its back.
Confidence: High Rated Win Price: $1.30
Race 4 – 1790m McDonalds Irymple & Mildura 54-63 Pace Final
4/9 Dallas Miki – Ros Rolfe/Ros Rolfe
There was only the one heat of this final and they line up almost identically, where Dallas Miki was able to win well, with a strong showing of strength and speed. In saying that, this draw and trip is always a low-percentage play at Mildura, so temper confidence slightly.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $1.80
Race 5 – 2600m CA Fitness Mildura Cup Final (Listed Classic)
5/8 Fox Dan – Ryan Sanderson/Emma Stewart
This is without question the strongest edition in nearly a decade, and I think the Emma Stewart-trained pair Fox Dan and Captain Perfect stand out as the ones to beat. They were the Victoria Derby quinella, with Fox Dan winning, who is also credentialled with an outstanding 2nd in the Eureka. He led in the heat and, considering he was first up, he was terrific and will only come on from that run.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $3.00
Race 6 – 2190m Park Douglas Printing 64-75 Pace Final
7/1 Bizzness Class – Luke Dunne/Michael Gadsen
Bizzness Class won the only heat of this final as favourite, and although he won convincingly, he received an outstanding drive. Luke Dunne will need to produce that again, as it looks likely he’ll be crossed again and will need luck at some point, with luck he’s the one to beat.
Confidence: Low Rated Win Price: $2.20
Race 7 – 1790m Zhodarnah Racing Up to 49 Pace
7/6 Im Alright Jack – Luke Dunne/Boris Devcic
Im Alright Jack may roll the dice and have a crack for the lead here, with the logical danger Rocking Wroxton the main speed adversary on the front row, but up in class. If he finds the front, he’ll be very hard to get past, but even if he doesn’t his best times give him claims.
Confidence: Medium Rated Win Price: $3.00
Race 8 – 1790m Aust Pacing Gold Up to 39 Pace
8/8 Grenade – Corey Johnson/Anthony Schembri
Grenade has been going well without winning at this track and was very luckless on Tuesday night when held up at a vital stage with plenty to offer. The trailing draw helps his chances to map well and come with one run off the right tempo.
Confidence: Medium Rated Place Price: $2.00
